21 Reasons You Should Quit Your Day Job And Travel The World

Tags: , , ,

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” – Maya Angelou

I discovered Maya Angelou when I was 15 because one of my favorite artists, Fiona Apple, loved her. Thanks Fiona and thanks Maya for providing such a powerful quote.

Most people are born with an interest in travel that never subsides. The fact that blogs like Chris Guillebeau’s, Gary Arndt’s, or this one (on a much much smaller scale) are as popular as they are is proof of this fact.

The problem is that most of us, and I fell into this trap too, put it off. Either for 1-2 weeks at a time on a yearly vacation or “until some day when X happens.” Whatever eXcuse (get it?) you have for continuing on living a life you’re not thrilled with, it’s unfounded. There is always a way. (I just set myself up for a slew of “but, but, but my situation is different” comments/e-mails.)

As you already know from Lesson #13, you’re not as different as you think. Whatever situation you’re in, someone has already been there and still made things happen.

In another post I will present to you the “how.” Here now, I present to you the “why”: 21 reasons you should quit your day job and travel the world …

  1. You’ll become more open minded and learn to treat people with more respect. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Unless, maybe, you stay in sanitized resorts. But since not many people can afford to stay in sanitized resorts long term, this isn’t even an issue.
  2. Your job is dragging you down. (In very rare cases it’s not, and that rules.)
  3. You’re unhappy.
  4. Slaving away is getting in the way of your dreams.
  5. Traveling long term is cheaper than living wherever you’re living.
  6. It will stretch you to do things you didn’t think you could do.
  7. You might not have any big “revelations” or “aha moments” but you’ll have a blast anyway.
  8. If you have kids it will set them up for a life of independence instead of setting them up to be cogs in a machine. We need more children who are exposed to how most other people live instead of sanitized first world society. I met a British family, 5 kids aged 6-16 and their Parents, on the train up to Chiang Mai. The kids were having a ball experiencing all these new things and I could already pick out leadership qualities among each of them. In addition, they were incredibly respectful, which I’m finding less and less among children.
  9. You can eat your favorite foods in the countries where they originated.
  10. You’ll experience new foods that will quickly become your new favorites.
  11. The best fruit in the world, Jakfruit, is plentiful and cheap in Thailand. (OK, so that was a specific case for why you should travel to Thailand as opposed to anywhere. Whatever, Jakfruit is the best fruit in the world. I discovered it while in the Daintree Rainforest in Northern Queensland, Australia.)
  12. Even when it’s dangerous, it’s not as dangerous as some people would have you believe. I’ve felt more fear walking the streets of Detroit with $10 in my pocket than walking around Mumbai or Bangkok at night with thousands of dollars in gear and cash on my person.
  13. You will stumble onto awesome events like Holi and Songkran. Who doesn’t love a week-long water fight? :)
  14. This site makes a lot of good cases for saving your tax dollars by living elsewhere.
  15. You will meet, and make friends with, people who you would never have met staying where you are. Most of us only associate with people in our immediate geographical areas. I call it Friendship By Geography, and it’s incredibly sad.
  16. Facing your fears is good for you. And you will face all of them, sometimes in a single day, when traveling. How many fears do you face on a daily basis at your day job? How much do you grow as a person at your day job?
  17. You will no longer have to participate in office politics or water cooler gossip. If that’s the kind of thing you enjoy then why are you reading this site in the first place? :)
  18. You will have more time for your family, friends, and maybe more importantly, for yourself.
  19. You will become a master of fake sign language. Also known as Traveler’s Sign Language. It’s frustrating for a spell, but when your communication is finally understood it’s an awesome feeling.
  20. Even if you never become fluent, learning and using a few words in new languages is fun. My favorite thing in the world is now the Thai bow/greeting. I know the way I say it is probably horrible, but the old lady who runs the best veg restaurant in Chiang Mai (Save Thunya on Nantaram Rd just outside Chiang Mai Gate) always treats me like a king when I come in. I know she appreciates my limited Thai because she speaks approximately 3 words of English so we’re in the same boat. I wonder if I can use the Thai greeting everywhere I go? :)  If you think it’s difficult learning new languages, Benny at FluentIn3Months.com has the best course available on the topic: click here to get the Language Hacking Guide.
  21. You owe it to yourself to be Ridiculously Extraordinary. Most day jobs would not be categorized as such.

What have I missed? I know there are many more good reasons to quit your day job and travel the world so leave them in the comments below …Also, no excuses in the comments. Only positive thoughts please. ;)

Ten Questions You Should Ask Your Travel Operator

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Here is a list of FAQ’s that should come to your mind and you should ask before doing a deal with them.travel_agent

1. How long has your company been in business?

The number of years equates with amount of experience. Obviously an older company is reliable and has extensive information about the adventure places. They are also in a better position to provide you with facilities and guide you throughout your trip. One more reason why this question should be raised is that now a days the web has facilitated the new companies in looking very impressive. You should not get wooed by looks alone.

2. What sort of adventure activities do they provide? Is it for the entire time or just the adventure part of the trip?

This question should help you decide how much they understand what they are trying to sell. If you are speaking to them about biking expeditions and they offer you sight seeing on bikes it is clear that too believe in the philosophy of having the maximum fun. And even if they don’t offer you that, you have a choice to decide.

3. How early should I make a reservation?

This question should be asked aiming to find out the popularity of the tour. Sometimes they would ask you to do it straightaway because the tickets sell out fast. Or they can ask you to take your time, decide and then register with them. In any case their interest in getting you onboard comes forth.

4. How long have you been running the specific tour I am interested in?

If the company has been offering you the chosen tour for long they will have loads of information to share about it. If the tour is new then there might be a few things to be worked out. But that depends on the reputation of the company. Whatever be the reason you should at least ask.

5. What is your most popular adventure tour package and why?

This question lets you know their areas of specialization. You should get detailed information if the company has any special tours.

6. Do they provide guided tours or self-guided tours? Can they make the adventure holiday suiting your needs?

This will show case the range of tours they provide. And the tailor-made part will highlight their contact at those places which again comes to how much experiences they have had organizing the said tour.

7. What do your previous customers say about the degree of difficulty on this tour?

Travel companies generally rate their tour packages based on their customers experience and their own too. This should help you decide what tour to choose that suits your temperament.

8. Can they let you speak to people who have been their customers before?

You might get mixed answers here. Some might give you contacts straight away and some might refuse saying it’s against their policy. You should take a chance with this question.

9. What age group does the tour package generally have?

Now you don’t want to be the only 25 year old in a group of older people. If you have a better idea of the group composition you’d know which tour to choose.

10. What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

Every company has their own terms and conditions of cancellations. And it is better to know them in advance then to be met by some unexpected shocks.

Surfing is one of the most popular adventure sports in the world but the problem with it is that the conditions required to surf properly are not available everywhere. There are some specific regions across the globe where the conditions are just right to enjoy riding the waves. Also, even at these surfing hotspots, you might not be able to surf all year round. There might be problems due to inclement weather and other factors. Thus, it is very important to do proper background research and information checks before packing your bags for a fun and enjoyable surfing holiday.

6 Tips to Traveling by Car, Truck Or SUV With Children

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

traveling-with-children

Traveling with small children can be a pleasurable experience for adults and children, if prepared. If the traveling event has not been planned in advance it can cause unneeded stress for adults and children, thereby instantly reducing some of the enjoyment that takes place during a family road trip. One idea to alleviate any departing stress would be departing just prior to a child’s normal sleep time. Leaving around the time of a child’s normal sleep schedule usually allows for a few hours of settling in and getting the first leg of the journey completed with little to no distraction. With that being said, parents planning to drive through the late evening hours may want to alter their own routine enough in advance to schedule in a nap. This will assure that the family is traveling with a well rested and alert driver at the wheel.

Other than departing around a child’s sleep schedule, there are a few items that children can bring with on a trip that will help ease the discomfort and restlessness a small child may experience during a long road trip. When possible, have the child pack their own backpack with things they are accustomed to playing with and depending on the age, your assistance may be required. This will involve the child in the planning and assist them in understanding why some of the changes are happening to their normal routine.

Following is a few ideas of items that can be easily packed and bring hours of satisfaction to a family trip.

• Age appropriate reading material such as picture books for small children and reading books for older children.

• Music playing electronic devices such as MP3 or CD player. Remember to bring along an extra set of batteries.

• Age appropriate activity books such as coloring books or puzzle books along with Color Wonder items. Color Wonder products do not show color unless used on specific paper or specific surfaces.

• Child specific backpack with personal items of their choice. Plastic drinking cups with built in straws that can have juice or water frozen in them prior to trip will reduce spilling and the need for ice.

• Electronic games

• Snack package containing fruit snacks or cereals such as Kix or Cheerios. Carrots and celery are another good option. There are many snack options available that will not leave sticky residue on fingers, face or automobile seats. Snacks can be packed to fit into a child’s personal backpack.

Keeping in mind the amount of time that will be required to travel to ones destination will help in determining just how many items the child should bring along. Age appropriate items that fit the child’s attention span will be key when implementing some of the previous tips.

Natural Sights of California

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

death_valley

California is the third biggest state in the US and stretches over 163,000 square miles. Its sprawling surface area and coastal location makes for a diverse climate and ecological landscape, which means that whilst some areas are arid and desert-like, others are far cooler and temperate. With European tourists eager to escape the Eurozone this summer, and more and more airlines offering cheap flights to San Francisco, here is my guide to some of the standout natural sights of the region.

Death Valley

redwood-national-park

Redwood National and State ParksDeath Valley desert in California is one of the hottest places in the western hemisphere and is the location of the highest recorded temperature, 56.7 degrees Celsius, measured in 1922. Located in the south east of the state, Death Valley National Park is visited by over 700,000 visitors a year who come to see the inspiring landscapes and ancient geology (some rocks are said to be billions of years old). As a consequence of its harsh environment, the valley is home to a host of unique animals such as the coyote and pupfish.

Humboldt and Del North counties are located in the north east of  California, and are home to a great number of redwood forest and other areas of natural beauty – collectively known as the Redwood National and State Parks. The redwoods in the area descend directly from a species that grew 20 million years ago, though what remains today (almost 40,000 acres) is just 2 percent of what would have existed pre-civilization. Although there are no hotels or motels within the parks, nearby towns such as Orick and Crescent City offer sufficient lodging for visitors.

lake-country

Lake County
Lake County takes its name from Clear Lake, the largest natural lake (68 square miles) entirely in California. Aside from being a quiet and tranquil destination for nature lovers, the area is also famed for wine production, an industry that flourished until prohibition in 1920 but has been re-established since the 60s. The county is also home to a portion of Medocino National Forest – a prime destination for recreational activities.

yosemite-national-park

Yosemite National Park
Yosemite is located in the central east of California, and stretches over 1,100 square miles. Despite its great size, the area that is mostly visited by the 3.5 million people each year is Yosemite Valley – a portion of the park that stretches over about 7 miles. The valley is popular due to the number of trails and the diversity of natural and geological sights within the relatively small area. Rock formations and cliffs such as El Capitan and Sentinal Rock offer inspirational scenery whilst the area boasts a Mediterranean climate.
