Oktoberfest celebrates 200 years

Tags: , , , , , ,

People from around the world flock to the biggest and most famous beer festival Oktoberfest as it marks its 200th anniversary this year.

The Munich beer festival kicked off Saturday with millions of visitors from around the world expected to raise a glass or two to celebrate the event’s 200th birthday over the next 17 days.

Munich’s mayor Christian Ude was to launch the German extravaganza that is “Oktoberfest” by “tapping”, or opening up, the first beer barrel on the stroke of midday (local time), following a tradition begun in 1810.

As a nod to the historic nature of this year’s event, billed as the world’s biggest people’s party, the festival has been extended by two days and expanded to include special grounds for horse races and exhibitions.

A historic reconstruction of the Bavarian festival in former centuries including an old Oktoberfest tent also aimed to pull in the punters, especially younger visitors less interested in the beer fest’s main draw.

For those who come for the amber nectar, however, six of the southern city’s breweries have set aside their usual rivalry to brew jointly an ale from a prized recipe dating back to the festival’s beginnings.

The city hopes this year to break both its visitor record of 7.1 million and that revellers will do their utmost to break the record of 6.9 million litres of beer downed.

But such historic fun does not come cheap. For the 200th anniversary of the beer festival, the price of a one-litre Mass (“measure”) was upped to a sobering cost of between 8.30 euros ($A11.54) and 8.90 euros ($A12.35).

And for the first time, smokers hoping to enjoy a cigarette with their ale were best advised to leave their packets at home after the state of Bavaria decided to ban smoking across the state in all pubs, cafes and beer tents.

Although the Oktoberfest enjoys a special exception for this year, most beer tents were expected to observe a voluntary ban.

The ban has led one enterprising German to invent a cocktail of microbacteria that “eat” the putrid smell of stale beer and sweat formerly masked by smoke. This was primed to make its debut at this year’s festival.

While this is the 200th anniversary of the beer fest, it is only the 177th edition, as the event was cancelled due to two cholera outbreaks, World War I and II as well as economic and political crises.

The global financial crisis dampened the enthusiasm of revellers last year, with a disappointing 5.7 million visitors coming through the gates amid Germany’s harshest post-war recession.

This year’s jubilee edition runs until October 4.

Great Festivals of the World

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Festivals. A place where people looking to have a great time can dance, listen to great music, celebrate, party, have fun, and relax. They happen all over the world for many different reasons. Some celebrate religion, some the new year, some art, some the harvest- whatever the reason, every month, somewhere in the world, you’ll find people descending on a location to celebrate and share a common experience. If you don’t like crowds, they probably aren’t for you. But if you feel like getting wet, dirty, staying up late, dancing, or just want to enjoy the energy of tens of thousands of people, check out some of these festivals:

Carnival (February)

Carnival is a giant party held right before the christian holiday of lent. Brazilian Carnival is the most famous and attracts the most numbers of people to it, with their dancing, parades, and floats, music, and drinking. Vegas may be sin city but this the sin holiday. Alternatively, if you can’t get down to Brazil, you can always head to Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Holi (March)

Holi is a Hindu holiday celebrated on the day after the full moon in early March and glorifies good harvest and fertility of the land. Moreover, Holi is also celebrates the triumph of good over evil, at least according to a legend involving the god Krishna. It can last up to 16 days, depending on where in the world you celebrate it. There is music, food, and, of course, throw paint on each other.

Songkran (Mid-April)
Songkran, Thai New Year
Thai new year is one of the most fun event’s I’ve even been to. This three day water fight that engulfs the whole country, you can’t walk two seconds out of your house without getting wet. No one is safe. The most fun I ever had was riding in a Tuk Tuk and having a mobile water fight with the people in the lane over.

Bay to Breakers (May)
bay to breakers in san francisco
The Bay to Breakers is an annual footrace which takes place in San Francisco, California on the third Sunday of May. The complete course is 7.46 miles long. The footrace is more of an excuse to drink and dress in weird costumes along the way. It’s a very large event and is more like a moving party than a footrace. Also expect to see a lot of people running in the nude.

Glastonbury (June)
glastonbury festival in england
Every summer in June, Pilton, England becomes the stage for one of the largest music festivals in the world. Glastonbury is best known for its contemporary music, but also features dance, comedy, theater, circus, cabaret and many other arts. About 175,000 people come to this area for a few days of music, mud, and mayhem. The fields turn into giant tent cities as everyone camps out looking to have some fun!

Swedish Midsummer (June)
celebrating the midsummer
During the summer solstice, Swedes come out and celebrate the start of the summer. It doesn’t get warm often this far north so when it does, people like to celebrate it. Local Swedes head out into nature, dance around a pole, eat lots of fish, drinks lots of beer, and stay up to enjoy the longest day of the year. After all, the sun doesn’t set until about midnight.

Running of the Bulls (July)
the running of the bulls
During July, Pamplona is filled with white clothed and red scarf wearing people who quench their thirst with sangria and the daring few try to out run some angry bulls. It’s usually a recipe for one or two people getting hurt and not something I’d ever consider doing but the atmosphere and celebrations are not to be missed. By the end of the day, your white shirt will soon be sangria red.

La Tomatina (August)
spain's la tomatina
For one hour, 20,000 people engage in a tomato fight in Bunol, Spain during the last Wednesday of august. The whistle blows and the tomatoes fly. It’s fun, it’s dirty, it’s the food fight we all dreamed about as a child. After you have your fill of tomatoes, you go wash off in the river and then join the dance party in town where the sangria and food flow.

Burning Man (August)
burning man
At the end of August, tens of thousands of people head out in the Nevada desert for 6 days of alternative living. Burning Man brings out the arty, the alternative, and the eccentric. It’s 6 days of camping (bring lots of water!), art, and music. At the end, a giant wooden man being set on fire (hence the name).

Oktoberfest (September)
getting drunk at oktoberfest
Though really in September this two week beer festival in Munich attracts people form all over the world with its beer halls, lederhosen, giant steins of beer, and huge pretzels. No one I know ever lasted the whole two weeks but 3 or 4 days you are there will be the haziest of your life. It’s the best place in the world to celebrate one of God’s greatest gifts- beer.

Day of the Dead (November)
day of the dead
With paper mache skeletons and candy skulls, Mexico’s carnavelesque day of the dead is one of the world’s most familiar festivals. Participants devote a day to cleaning their family graves, decorating them with candles and flowers, having picnics and dancing to mariachi bands. It’s an odd combination of remembrance and festivity.

All around the world and no matter what month of the year, you’ll find people celebrating. I’ve been to a large number of these festivals and my goal is to see them all. Not only are festivals fun they are also a great way to do something different than the normal sightseeing we do when we visit places. The next time you are looking for something wild, crazy, and festive, plan your trip around these celebrations of life.

Oktoberfest Party – Roll Out the Good Times

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Oktoberfest Party

It doesn’t get much better than a well planned Oktoberfest party. From its humble start as a wedding party in 1810 Oktoberfest has swept the world to become one of the most recognised party themes. In fact the traditional Bavarian costume of lederhosen and felt hat which has been associated, rightly or wrongly, with the drinking culture of Oktoberfest is now the fastest growing Stag Night themes around.

The October Festival (translation of Oktoberfest) began with the state fair that was proclaimed to celebrate the wedding of King Ludwig I to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hillurghausen during the October of 1810. The celebrations continued annually and were soon incorporated with the agricultural show held around the same time and from this beginning has grown the Oktoberfest we have today.

Starting during the second week of September and running through to the end of October, Oktoberfest has become an enormous festival with huge tents raised on Theresienwiese field in Munich along with huge fairgrounds with shooting galleries, fairground stalls and side-shows along with all manner of other amusements and activities.

Simply know to the local population as ‘Wies’n the celebrations commence with a procession of the brewers drays (wagons) which are decorated especially for the occasion and the tapping of the first barrel of the specially brewed Wies’n beer by the Mayor of Munich, a celebration which takes place precisely at midday and which is greeted by a salvo of cannon.

If you are throwing your own Oktoberfest party then we have a few useful ideas to assist you. First, let’s look for some unusual ideas for your invitations. The most common ‘snack’ food at Oktoberfest is the pretzel and one great idea is to get some large pretzels and either attach an invitation to it, or if they are large enough to be boxed, write the invitation inside of the box lid. To attach an invitation to an individual pretzel the best idea is to use a luggage label or any label that fits with the overall theme. If you are using the luggage label trick, the words ‘let us transport you to ……’ always fit well.

If you are designing your own invitations, Oktoberfest is always represented in the blue and white chequer board design which is part of the regions identity. This design and these colours would naturally flow through your room or yard decoration and most on-line party stores stock Bavarian themed decorations including flags, Oktoberfest bunting, hangers, beads and other goodies.

Oktoberfest costume

One of the fun parts of an Oktoberfest party is the costumes. This is a great opportunity for a themed fancy dress party with both the men and women dressing in stylised Bavarian costumes complete with long plaited wigs – er, for the ladies, and a choice of either the traditional pointed grey felt Bavarian hat or one of the green or brown hats complete with feather, the grander the better! Again, most online costume retailers will be able to offer you a selection of costumes to choose from based around lederhosen for the men and charming Heidi or Bier Maid styled dresses for the ladies.

Clearly, any Oktoberfest party should have some German beer but if you can’t find any then lager is a perfectly acceptable substitute. With the food, its pure indulgence with traditional foods like, German sausage, potato salad, sauerkraut, sweet or pickled cabbage with scrumptious Black Forest gateaux for dessert. There are some fantastic on-line recipe sites which will give you a selection of food ideas as well as itemising a complete Oktoberfest menu. And don’t forget the pretzels.
