How to Vacation on a Budget in Mexico

Tags: , ,

Taking that long awaited vacation to Mexico does not need to cost you every last dime you have. Plan ahead and give yourself a daily budget and you can get by spending a little and having a lot of fun.

When you purchase your vacation plan, look for one that includes meals, with the hotel and airfare. The main meal you will be interested in is Breakfast. You will want to be out and about during most of the day, so midday meals should not be a problem. You should watch for small “mom and pop” type eating establishments. Look for the ones that have a lot of locals eating at them. They know the food and they don’t spend a lot of money when the eat out. In Bucerias, where I live while in Mexico, The tiny restaurants put tables and chairs in the street after 6 p.m. and you just find a table and enjoy the food. In most cases, it is being cooked only a few feet from you and you can watch the whole thing.

If the vacation plan includes all meals, you will want to have dinner at the hotel and not at a fancy restaurant in town. keep in mind that the fancy restaurants that accept major credit cards, do that because they have major prices to match them.

While it might be tempting to have a few drinks at the Bars along the beach front, it is a wise move to limit it to one or two. Beer can run from $4.00 to $8.00 and Tequila can cost a whole lot more. It can add up very fast. When you are going to be at the Hotel for a few days, purchase a bottle and some mix and enjoy a couple of cocktails before going to dinner. Then it will be easy to limit how many you purchase during the evening.

If you like to try your luck in casinos, Mexico is starting to add them in the major cities. It can be a nights entertainment with out being too costly. They bet in paso’s so a $20 dollar bill can go a long way. They do charge for drinks but they run specials where the beer is $2.00 and that is a good price.

As for the souvenirs being sold almost everywhere. Buy yourself something nice, but keep in mind, that large Mexican sombrero may look stunning after only a couple of Margaritas, and only cost you about $20 American dollars or so, but will you get $2.00 for it at next years garage sale. Something smaller, might be a better idea.

One other thing to think about. You will see Wal-Mart, Sams and Costco stores in all the major cities, they are a comfortable place to shop, but they also can be a little more costly that the local markets. I do shop there for items like American fruits and wines, but I go local whenever I want to stretch my dollars.

Plan ahead, have a good time but try to work within your budget so that you are not still paying for your vacation long after it is over.

Top 10 Sexiest Beaches

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

1. KOH PHI PHI ISLAND, THAILAND

If you’ve seen The Beach, then you’ll know what limestone cliffs, turquoise waters and pristine white sand can do for romance. While the beach itself here has become something of a tourist trap since the film, it is still the ideal backdrop for some Summer loving.

 2. COLOMBIER BEACH, ST. BARTH’S

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why Colombier Beach is a sexy beach; accessible only by boat or a 25-minute hike along rocky terrain, the cove is all about blue skies, shimmering green water and flamingo-hued sand. While private yachts moor up at the cove’s entrance, you’ll be left largely to your own devices. We recommend bringing a picnic and cracking open a bottle of bubbly.

 3. PINK BEACH, ANTIGUA, CARIBBEAN

While movies such as Into The Blue and After The Sunset will have you thinking that Paradise Island in the Bahamas is the best place to get romantic on the sand, it’s not (unless you’re an exhibitionist, of course). Antigua’s Pink Beach offers a little privacy away from the madding crowds. Stretching eight miles and bordered by crystal-clear waters on one side and a handful of beautiful boutique hotels on the other, this is one picture-postcard sandbar. What’s more, the beach is only ever used by a few of the nearby hotels’ guests.

 4. WILDCAT BEACH, CALIFORNIA, USA

Secluded Wildcat Beach is located a full 30 minutes from San Francisco and requires a five-minute walk, but it’s worth it. What’s more, you can build a bonfire (with the necessary license, of course) and admire huge tide-fall cascades down from the cliffs and onto the sand behind you.

5. MAJAHUITAS COVE, MEXICO

Accessible only by boat, swaying palms, pristine white sand and turquoise waters await you at Majahuitas Cove. Named after a yellow hibiscus-like flower, it’s brimming with enough plant and wildlife to create a stunning natural backdrop. Day-trippers tread the sands during the day, but we recommend checking in to the eight-room hotel beside the beach.

6. MONDELLO BEACH, PALMERO, ITALY

Lovers of seafood, tree-lined boulevards and luxury hotel resorts will love what Mondello Beach has to offer; in fact, lovers will love it full-stop. Classy Mondello Beach has all the makings of a passionate Italian love story with sun-drenched sand and the fresh waters of the Mediterranean, and is super clean.

 7. STORE BEACH, SYDNEY

While it may seem impossible within the locale of a big, bustling city, Store Beach is actually pretty isolated. Hidden by a rock formation, it can only be reached by boat. And because it’s part of Sydney Harbour National Park, it’s kept spotless too.

 8. SUNSET BEACH, OAHU, HAWAII

It doesn’t get much sexier than Hawaii’s beaches, what with grass-skirt-wearing ladies and muscled surfer boys. However, few venture farther than Waikiki, which is where the crowds sip cocktails and get up to little else. Slip away to the North Shore’s Sunset Beach, where you’re certain to find a secluded spot.

 9. WHITE BAY BEACH, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

Stretching eight miles long and half-a-mile wide, there’s not much else to do on this gorgeous, picture-postcard island other than make out. It is a U-shaped piece of paradise.

 10. POLES BAY, KEA, GREECE

Forget about Greece’s more popular islands and head out to the island of Kea, a beautiful beach just a ferry ride away from Athens. Because it is not included on the main ferry routes and only a select few know about it, you’ll practically have the place to yourselves. Once there, make your way to Poles Bay – a three-hour walk – and indulge in the twin sand beaches, rocky landscape and ancient ruins. Unspoiled, isolated and evocative; what more could you want ?

Latin America: The Aztecs, the Mayans and the Incas

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Have you ever had a conversation with family or friends on mankind’s first appearance or on the beginning of the world? In Mexico, Central America and South America, there are plenty of myths describing how the three big latin american civilizations were founded. Just to refresh everyone’s memories, the three main civilizations are the Aztecs, the Mayans and the Incas. For all of you travellers that already visited the Machu Pichu, Cuzco, Chitchen Itza, Tulum, etc., you all know how breath-taking these sites can be.

Before explaining the myths of the three civilizations, it is very important to know that the city of Teotihuacan is, in all three civilizations, the place where everything was created. The legend says that in the dark underground of the city, the Gods were reunited to decide who would take care of what and had to sacrifice themselves by jumping in the deep cenotes so that they could die and fulfill their mission. The myth explain that the poorest and smaller god of all jumped in the hole and sacrificed himself with no hesitation and became the Sun, because of his braveness and determination and the stronger God, who was afraid, became the moon. I have never been to Teotihucan, Mexico, but I’ve heard amazing stories and feedback from it. I know that Hernan Cortez was amazed by the city when he came to conquer the Aztecs. So please, if any of you have been, I would appreciate it if you could share some information on it. Ok, let’s start with the Aztecs, they were the most powerful and feared people in Meso-America and were considered as a civilization of warriors. The Myth explains that the Aztecs, at first, were hated by all and were chased from wherever they went. But, fortunately, the Coluacs, decided to accept them in their civilization because they were very impressed by them. After living in Aztlan for a very long time, they began their search for their promised land guided by Huitzilopochtli, the left hummingbird, or the main God, who tells them to walk till they would see an eagle eating a snake. So after years of walking, they finally found an eagle eating a snake in the city of Tenochtitlan and based their civilization at that very location. As you noticed, the logo on the mexican flag is an eagle eating a snake. Also, the Aztecs believed they were the descent population of the sun, and believed that they often had to sacrifice blood and enemies to feed them, because if they would stop feeding the gods, it would mean the end of life. The Mayas are probably the most intelligent civilization that has existed in meso-america because of their progress in astronomy, mathematics and architecture. Also, unlike the other civilizations, they don’t have any strong capital or main city, they have little city with concentrated powers in all of them, wich we could compare to a very early stage of federalism . Again, if any readers ever visited cities such as Tikal, Palenque, Copan or Chitchen Itza please leave comments to share the memories. The third most important civilization is the Incas. This huge civilization was the last one before the second spanish wave of conquistadors, led by Francisco Pizzaro, eliminated them. The myth explains that Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, who were bother and sister, and husband and wife, and children of the Sun. After emerging from the Titicaca Lake that borders Peru and Bolivia, the Sun told them to go on a mission and to install themselves at the exact place where Manco Capac’s symbolic stick would sink to the ground. As many of you know, that symbolic place was Cuzco. I hope you’ve all enjoyed this brief History article on the three main civilizations of latin america, and even if it sound a bit “essay-ish” I really hope it picked your curiosity to an eventual trip in the cities mentioned in the article. For those who have already been, please share some memories with us .

Mexican Airline Passengers drunk, not swine flu

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

linthicum-airport

LINTHICUM, Maryland – Two men who had too much to drink caused 117 passengers on a flight from Mexico to Maryland to wait on board after landing while health authorities checked the two for symptoms of swine flu, officials said.

The commotion began when AirTran Flight 85 from Cancun, Mexico, radioed ahead to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport that two passengers had nausea and fever, said airport spokesman Jonathan Dean. When it landed, the airport’s fire and rescue department met it.

The two men were isolated and examined, said David Paulson, director of communications for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters said they simply had too much to drink.

Forgot Passport Mexican Border

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

san_diego-mexican_border

I knew my Travel pal Carlos was a little absent minded, but I couldn’t believe he’d left his passport at our hotel in Beverly Hills. He thought Mexico was part of the United States ! I told him History shows it was the other way round ! We drove through the  San Diego – Mexican border  without any document check and we thought he could be OK. We headed to our usual place to start in a strange city; The Hard Rock Cafe.  A few Jack Daniels and we were ready to explore Tijuana. I went about purchasing some gold and other stuff you can’t get any where but Mexico. Carlos indulged in the Spa for a massage at Ave. Cuauhtemoc. We then met at the last Aztec emperor statue. A couple of hours at the Arts and Crafts Market, It’s two blocks from Avenida Revolucion at the intersection of Avenida Negrete and Calle Secunda. I purchased some flick knives, dusters, & spray. As we lined up to go back into the U S,  Carlos was real nervous about all the illegal items  I had in my possession.

tijuana-hard-rock1

“How you going to get though customs with all that metal” he said nevously, At least I have my passport pal !  We approached the last desk to get our passport stamped prior to the metal detector. Of course the Custom Officials took Carlos to their rear office to run checks on his Identity. Now I had to get past the metal Detector with enough metal to bring the Customs SWAT team !

A few people ahead of me buzzed the detector and Customs Officers Motioned them to an area around the other side to scan them with the  handheld,  I seized my chance. Putting my head down and pretending to check something in my front travel pouch I walked right past the Metal detector and Customs, no one stopped me and I was back in the good ol US of A !  I stopped at the first diner across the border to have lunch, later I go the Counter where I meet  a  nice Mexican girl and  we have drink and I explain my friend is detained by US Customs , Everyone I know has Customs after them ! she stated, we laughed and talked as we waited for Carlos.  They released him all disheveled and traumatized over two hours later ! He was amazed I got though fine with enough weaponry to take out 4 or 5 guys in a street fight ! The girls name was Wanita but that’s for another Article soon !
