There is no doubt that Melbourne comes alive at Night

Tags: ,

Melbourne is considered Australia’s bar capital and hub of live music, comedy and Broadway music theatre. Melbourne has a vibrant nightlife encompassing cocktail lounges, pubs, underground dance clubs and international theatre productions.

The extent of the Melbourne nightlife and entertainment always impresses those new to Melbourne; and why shouldn’t it? As a combined total, Melbourne has over 1,000 pubs, bars and nightclubs.

Closing times in Melbourne are often staggered, with one set of pubs perhaps closing at 11pm, the next set at 1am, and the rest at 3am. A handful of venues have a 5am or even 7am license. This nicely ensures that the Melbourne nightlife and entertainment tends to move around a little – what might be a dead nightlife spot at 11pm might be heaving at 1am.

In Melbourne, find an ever-increasing number of trendy clubs and bars, ideal places for convivial drinking, Sex In The City–style socializing and grooving to the chilled sounds of DJs late into the night. Melbourne also boasts Australia’s largest concentration of live music venues, where local and international bands cover everything from grunge rock and techno to jazz, blues and the avant-garde. As well, you can see the latest Hollywood blockbuster, catch a cabaret show featuring one of Melbourne’s comedy stalwarts or visit the Crown Entertainment Complex, home to Australia’s largest casino, cinemas, discos and designer stores.

Melbourne has a lively passion for social eating and drinking, which is reflected in the thousands of restaurants serving up gastronomic experiences from around the world. Everywhere you look you will uncover a vast array of fashionable cafes, where you can enjoy Melbourne’s existential coffee culture to the fullest.
Melbourne is a style-setter with some of the best shopping and nightlife in Australia. Whether you are searching for haute couture or vintage clothing, sparkling chardonnay, uber-chic bars, clubs or jazz venues, Melbourne has it all.

Newcastle ranks in world’s best cities

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

  • Newcastle voted among world’s best cities
  • Selected in Lonely Planet list
  • Sydney, Melbourne “too dull”

NEWCASTLE has been named as one of the top 10 must-see destinations in the world according to Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel 2011′ book.

Cities like London and Paris failed to make the list, with the NSW harbour city ranked ninth the selection.

The authors have described Newcastle as “underrated”, saying the city has been “overshadowed by its bigger, bolder and better-known sibling, Sydney”.

However Sydney, and Melbourne, have never made the list before as they are “too dull”.

Lonely Planet Asia Pacific travel editor Shawn Low said the book aims to inspire travellers to pick lesser known cities to explore.

Mr Low said hundreds of ideas were submitted by authors, staff and bloggers, then refined by a panel of in-house travel experts.

“The rankings come down to topicality, excitement, value for money and that special X-factor.

“We want to pick a destination that has good thing about it that has been flying under the radar a bit.

“Newcastle is a great city.”

Mr Low said that Australia’s better-know cities such as Sydney and Melbourne haven’t made the list as they are not interesting enough.

“Sydney and Melbourne are obvious choices, they are quite dull. We want to inspire people to think more broadly.”

Newcastle’s beaches, climate, night-life and arts were listed as key elements placing the city on the radar.

“Today’s ‘new’ Newcastle is a unique blend of imagination, sophistication and laid-back surf culture,” Lonely Planet‘s book says.

Tourism Hunter’s Executive Manager Sheridan Ferrier says it is an “honour” to be included in the top 10 list.

“I think it is testament to the range of experiences that we have to offer in Newcastle and is certainly attributed to our lifestyle as well,” Ms Ferrier told ABC News.

The city’s most bizarre sight, according to the authors, is the dome-shaped Queens Wharf Tower, which is 40m tall.

The city receives over 100,000 visitors per year.

Other cities to make the list include New York City, US; Tangier, Morocco; Tel Aviv, Israel; Wellington, New Zealand; Valencia, Spain; Iquitos, Peru; Ghent, Belgium; Delhi, India and Chang Mai, Thailand.

Campervan Road Trip, Australia’s Pacific Coast From Sydney to Brisbane

Tags: , , , , , ,

Day by Day Road Trip Journey from Sydney to Brisbane

You could fly from Sydney to Brisbane but then you would miss all the fun, sparkling white sand beaches, great places to swim, snorkel, dive or surf in glistening azure blue waters. Have a great time and see it all in a rental campervan. Camp along the way and take leisurely strolls through quaint villages, lush rainforests, wineries, and find time to relax in the sun, meet the friendly locals, and make new friends… the real up close and personal experience of Australia.

Your options for this road trip is a guided motorcoach tour, your own vehicle, rental car and staying in hotels or if you want to be free and adventurous rent a self-drive hire campervan in Australia. Make up your own Walkabout! Stay in caravan parks and campsites along the way, experience freedom on the road while you cruise the roads in comfort in a motor home or rent a campervan in Sydney or Brisbane. See the land down under… the locals call “Oz”, in an economical hire campervan your way.

Starting in Sydney and Heading up the Central Coast

This first day you have the opportunity to take in many sights along the way, whether you are traveling by car, motor coach or get a hire campervan in Sydney. Stop at Bouddi National Park for a bushwalk (tramping, hiking on defined trails, tracks, or roads) in this natural reserve fringed by lush rainforest, cliffs of sandstone, and secluded beaches. North of Sydney about an hour up the road you come upon Avoca Beach, a long crescent shaped golden-sand beach and popular spot for families, holiday visitors, surfers, and known as an angler’s paradise. Hire (rent) water sports equipment, stroll the seashore, or relax and enjoy the sun. Next is Terrigal where you can fish right from the beach, explore Bateau Bay with its protected beaches and the wildlife of the Towoon Bay. Try a bike ride around the shores of Tuggerah Lake where you can also swim, sail, canoe, sailboard or water ski and then feed the fish and pelicans right off the beaches at The Entrance. If you are up to it, hop on the ferry and take a bushwalk, see wildflowers and Aboriginal art at Brisbane National Park. Overnight in one of the nearby Central Coast towns or caravan park campsites if you are in a campervan.

From Australia’s Central Coast to the Hunter Valley

The second day takes you to Newcastle to explore the many options it has in store. Surf Nobby’s Beach, go to Newcastle Harbour for wreck diving, take a swim on Bar Beach or check out Dixon Park for a hang-gliding adventure. The Hunter Valley offers a plentitude of enticing wineries for tasting, 120 to choose from with excellent variety. Broke presents a handcrafted selection for tasting, don’t miss Nightingale wines just on Milbrodale Road, and the cellar doors at Lovedale’s are always open for purchases. For a different view, take a hot air balloon ride at Pokolbin and gaze at vineyards from above. Cessnock features skydiving in tandem or head to Yengo National Park for a leisurely bushwalk. Once your day is done, enjoy a pleasant night stay in historic Wollombi, Cessnock, Broke, or Lovedale, or nearby caravan park especially appealing to those traveling in hire campervans.

Depart today from the Hunter Valley for Port Stephens

Day three stretches past Kurri Kurri to Port Stephens with its numerous beaches, 26 in fact! Nelson Head Lighthouse awards views of the bay, a truly panoramic experience. You can cruise or kayak along side bottled-nosed dolphins in Nelson Bay and go to Fly Point for some snorkeling or diving. Grab a ferry destined for the Tea Gardens, or stop for a bite to eat at the Hawks Nest. There is also fishing or swimming at the beaches of Myall Lakes National Park. On the opposite side of the bay stands Tomaree Headland with four-wheel driving access or take up quad biking on Stockton Beach. When you are ready to settle in for the night, try Fingle Bay or Anna for a quiet stay or Nelson Bay for a resort-type atmosphere.

Goodbye Port Stephens Say Hello to Coffs Harbour

As you head out on day four, get ready to travel through history in Raymond Terrace. Seal Rocks renders options for scuba diving or fishing, make your way to Forster to swim. Inland, there is bushwalking and white water rafting in a rainforest setting including a view of the Barrington Tops with its dormant volcano peaks. A sight that is included on the World Heritage list. Impressive Ellenborough Falls awaits you next or enjoy a camel safari ride on Port Macquarie’s Lighthouse Beach. Snag your choice of deep sea fishing, diving, or snorkeling at the South West Rocks or simply take it easy on one of the supremely white, unpopulated Nambucca Heads beaches, such difficult choices to make! Coffs Harbour offers many types of overnight accommodation, including hotels, inns, and caravan park campsites equipped for rental campervans.

Onward and Upwards from Coffs Harbour to Byron Bay

Solitary Islands Marine Park flaunts great fishing and scuba diving. Explore the wonders of the rainforest of Gondwanan in Dorrigo National Park. Bongil Bongil National Park has kayaking routes throughout or pop over to Nymboida River for some white water rafting thrills. The rustic charm in Grafton invites you to coast on Clarence River along side dolphins or take a train ride over Glenreagh Mountains. Look west towards luscious Bellingen to walk along the rim of the ancient volcano at Mount Warning National Park. Drive through quaint Ballina on your way to Byron Bay and your overnight stay. Accommodation varies from Australia’s campervan caravan parks to the super luxurious hotels. Enjoy.

Sunny Byron Bay to the Sparkling Gold Coast

Start day six by rising at dawn to stroll alongside the whales on Cape Byron Walking Track, from May to November. Cape Byron Marine Park boasts snorkeling amongst dolphins and sea turtles or make your way to Main Beach for some kayaking or swimming. Surf the exhilarating waves off the Pass. Next, check out the lighthouse for some enlightening hang gliding or trot to Bangalow for a horseback ride. The hinterland of Byron hosts tours for all your four-wheel driving pleasure. The scenic Gold Coast is a mere ninety minute route north. When it’s time to count some sheep, park your campervan at one of the hinterland retreat campsites or Surfer’s Paradise.

Sparkling Gold Coast to Lovely Brisbane

The last leg of your journey starts at Main Beach, Kirra or Broadbeach for some swimming off golden sandy beaches and surfing at Surfer’s Paradise. The wreck of Scottish Prince at Main Beach invites all to dive, snorkel the site, or marvel at the sights of the synthetic reef at Narrow Neck. There is bushwalking beside waterfalls and stone pools, rainforests, and foliage at Tamborine Mountain, Lamington to Springbok National Parks. Even more excitement awaits theme park visitors at Dreamworld’s massive tidal wave, connect with sea life in Sea World by swimming alongside dolphins, or make a seal your new best friend. Movie World offers a back stage peek at movie making for a fun packed day. Continue your drive towards Brisbane and overnight in one of the many Brisbane campsites and experience the sophisticated, relaxed city with all it has to offer. Here as you end your road trip stay over in Brisbane for a few days to enjoy, drop off your rental campervan in Brisbane or continue up to the tropical north to Cairns.

Promoter   http://www.petermaniatis.com/

An eventful action packed night took place at the hall with which satisfied all the fight fans in attendance.

It was named ELITE CRANES CUP after the main sponsors

Interim IBF Pan Pacific Welterweight title

Heath Ellis takes Jakkirt Suwunnalirt to schoolEllis V Thai

Ellis displayed a masterful and stylish win over Suwunnalirt and again displayed signs that he is ready to tackle the bigger guns in the game.

After a stylish first round Ellis tried a few potential ko punches in the second but fell short of target.

In the third a sharp left hook, part of a speedy combination dropped Suwunnalirt for an eight count.

In the ninth round Ellis missed an opportunity as he had his opponent shaken but missed following it up or didn’t want to take the risk in case of it being a luring act.

All in all I gave Ellis every round of the fight.

Suwunnalirt is no pussy in boxing and has gone 12 rounds distance with Current IBO champ Lovemore N’dou and stopped by Michael Katsidis holder of the WBO lightweight title.

WBF Intercontinental Light Middleweight title.Delic v McMahon

Eddie Delic gets the pat over Shannon McMahon in what seems a potential YVB fight of the year award winner.

Eddie Delic scored a dramatic unanimous points win in his grudge match with McMahon in a fight that kept the crowd on its feet from start to finish. In the process Delic claimed the vacant WBF Intercontinental light-middleweight title.

Melbourne named world’s best sports city

Tags: , ,

Melbourne

Melbourne has been saying it for years and now it’s been confirmed – Melbourne is the best sporting city in the world.

Melbourne got the nod ahead of Berlin and Doha at the Sport Business Sports Event Management Awards, held at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Thursday.

Victorian Tourism and Major Events Minister Tim Holding says it is a great achievement for Melbourne to win the gold medal in the Sports City category at the awards, now in its third year.

“This award confirms what we have all known for a long time – no other city puts on a major sporting event like Melbourne,” Mr Holding said.

Melbourne Cup

“You only had to be at Flemington last week for the Melbourne Cup or be at Kingston Heath this week to see Tiger Woods and Geoff Ogilvy competing in the Masters to see our major events strategy on show.”

He says the judges have recognized the passion that Melbournians and Victorians have for sport and major events.

Socceroos

Melbourne’s sports calendar over the next two years include the Socceroos’ last match on Australian soil in June before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the UCI Road World Cycling Championships next October and the 2011 Presidents Cup golf tournament, to be played at Royal Melbourne.

solimanWorld middleweight contender Sam Soliman (37-11, 15 KOs) was impressive in stopping Australian super middleweight champion Les Piper (10-3-3, 2 KOs) in seven rounds on Sunday at the Penisula, Docklands, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Soliman controlled the action over his aggressive opponent by outworking him most of the rounds. In round seven Piper was dropped twice by hard body shots at which point referee Ignatius Missailidis crowned the Melbourne boxer. IBF #14 Soliman targeted the best middleweights in the world. “I am after the IBF middleweight champion Sebastian Sylvester who I regard as a good champion but he does not have the skills or the experience against the top level middleweights to defeat me. I am prepared to go fight him in Germany and I will beat him easy.”

In the main supporting bout. WBO #14 140-pounder Lance Gostelow (20-2, 14 KOs) outscored Fatai Onikeke (23-4, 20 KOs) over twelve rounds. Scores were 120-108, 119-109, 120-108. Onikeke was the aggressor but he was outworked by Gostelow who connected with effective combinations boxing on the backmove. Former IBF jr lightweight champion Barry Michael said. “Lance Gostelow is the best boxer in Australia in my opinion.”

In a super middleweight six-rounder, formerly world rated Daniel “Porky” Lovett (18-4, 10 KOs) scored a split decision over Kashif Mumtaz (5-11-1, 4 KOs) in a crowd pleaser.

WBO #15 welterweight Samuel Colomban (14-3, 6 KOs) outworked Rey Anton Olarte (8-12-2, 0 KOs) of the Philippines in an action fight over six. Promoter: Brian Amatruda and Barry Michael

British travellers to fly to Australia for around $20.

Cheap … British travellers will soon be able to fly to Australia for around $20.

* New generation of 10 pound Poms
* Can fly to Australia for around $20
* Move created to boost tourism

IN an offer almost too good to be true, British travellers will soon be able to fly to Australia for less than the price of a guide book.

In a take on the term £10 Pom, originally coined to describe British citizens who migrated to Australia after World War II, the scheme will allow Brits to travel Down Under for just STG10 ($20.42).
The move to boost the tourism industry will see 150 Qantas tickets to Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane or Adelaide available for anyone with a valid Working Holiday Visa.
Travellers will be able to return home whenever they wish.
The limited tickets will be available from STA Travel outlets across the UK on August 5 on a first-come, first-served basis.
The fare is available for departures between August 15 and September 30 and November 1 to 30.
Would-be travellers are being encouraged to camp out for the tax-inclusive tickets, which are expected to be snapped up within hours.
STA Travel group managing director John Constable said people were looking for good value holidays in the current climate.
”And it doesn’t come much better than Oz for just a tenner,” he said in a statement.”The £10 Pom is an opportunity for Brits to experience all that Australia has to offer, from working a vineyard in Margaret River to learning to surf on Bondi Beach.”
More than 35,000 young Brits travel on the working holiday program each year, Tourism Australia’s UK/Europe general manager Rodney Harrex said.
”The original £10 Pom assisted passage scheme resulted in a British fascination with the faraway land of Oz that has endured every since,” he said.
Mr Harrex said it was hoped the offer would bolster awareness of Australia’s working holiday program, encouraging more 18 to 30-year-olds to come in the future.
