Greece: Nine Places to Avoid the Crowds

Tags: , , ,

The ancient cities of Thessaloniki and Athens, with their monuments and museums, along with the “sexy” islands like Mykonos and their white-washed buildings and pristine beaches, are classic stops on tours of Greece for their culture, history and beauty. However, some of Greece’s lesser-known natural wonders, authentic towns and archaeological sites are just as stunning – and have many fewer tourists, allowing for a more intimate experience.  Including any of the following nine places in your itinerary will make your trip even more memorable.

Vergina

vergina

Vergina, the site of the burials of Macedonian kings, is an hour’s drive north of Thessaloniki. Here you can stroll around unusual mound-shaped tombs (“tumuli”) dating from the 11th-8th centuries B.C. and through a substantial 4th century B.C palace with royal banquet halls, one with a beautiful mosaic floor. However, it is underground where the true marvel awaits.

Constructed in 1993, the Royal Tombs Museum is entered through an unassuming doorway built into one of the mounds.  Inside are the exposed interiors of three of the circa 300 B.C. tombs: enclosed and protected in glass, you get an up-close look of the tomb excavations, including their stunning wall paintings. Much of the “bling” – the gold, glass, ivory, marble and wood artifacts from the tombs – is also on display. Of particular note is the tomb of Philip II, Alexander the Great’s father: the Doric temple facade with a marble door, topped with an Ionic frieze, includes a painting of a hunting scene with figures of Philip and Alexander and is one of the only known surviving examples of ancient Greek painting of this kind.

Meteora

met

Drive two and one-half hours southwest of Thessaloniki to find Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that abounds with fantastic peaks created by nature’s erosion of the surrounding rock. The spires appear inaccessible and it is difficult to imagine the resolve of the religious hermits who first climbed up to settle in the caves and fissures. In the 9th century, monks topped the towers with monasteries. Some of the monasteries have been turned into museums; all are worth the climb up steps to visit, but being reasonably fit will make the trek that much more enjoyable.

Even if you are not up to the climb, the view is still remarkable: from first light through to the evening hours, the sun washes the gray rocks with a paint box of colors; at night the towers are spectacularly illuminated by spotlights. Meteora is also treasured by Greeks as the inhabitants helped in keeping alive Greek Orthodox religious traditions and Hellenic culture during the Middle Ages and the Turk occupation of Greece from 1453 to 1829.

Gytheon

gyth

Gytheon is a three hour drive southwest of Athens. This small port town spreads down the side of Mount Koumaros to the sea, and is a great base for day trips in the southern Peloponnese part of the country. It has not yet been discovered by the tour companies, and you will feel like you are in “real” Greece as you wander along the port and through the small streets lined with neo-classical buildings with flower-laden balconies. The beauty of the surrounding area made it a perfect setting for the movie “The Tempest.”

Restaurants and cafes abound – take a break after sightseeing and enjoy typically Greek grilled octopus alongside a glass of “ouzo” at an outside taverna.  On the south side of the town is the small, pine covered island of Kranai with its Ethnological Museum, housed in an Ottoman tower, and 25 meter high lighthouse. On the other side of the town you will find an ancient theater from the 1st Century.

Diros Caves

caves

After a 1 ½ hour scenic drive northwest from Gytheon, you will reach the underground waterways of the Diros Caves, which are among the most stunning natural attractions in Greece. Archeological finds include plenty of mammal fossils, including one of the largest discoveries of hippopotamus bones in Europe. Paleolithic and Neolithic artifacts (on display in the adjacent museum) have been found here as well, indicating that the caves were one of the earliest inhabited places in Greece.

The caves are estimated to be about 14 kilometers long, but only about 1,500 meters can be seen on a guided visit. The 30 minute tour is by boat and starts at the edge of an underground lake, where you will don a hard-hat and life preserver.  The guide uses poles to maneuver the boat through the caverns and tunnels, which are eerily lit and decked out with breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites. Warning for the seriously claustrophobic: some sections are just wide enough to allow the boat passage, and in some stretches you have to duck your head. The air is about seventy degrees year-round, so a sweater or light jacket is recommended for those who get cold easily.

Mystras

Forty kilometers north of Gytheon lay the ruins of the city of Mystras, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overlooking the city of Sparta, Mystras began as a fortress built in 1249, and was expanded by the Venetian and Turk occupiers. The ruins are spread over the side of tree-dotted Mt. Taygetos and consist of a Citadel near the peak and fortified Upper, Middle and Lower Towns cascading further down the mountain.

The site was abandoned in 1832, but is now occupied by a convent of nuns who care for the antiquities. As you walk along its paths, you will wonder at the palaces, walls and gates as well as well-maintained frescos inside the many churches such as Agios Demitrios, where you will also find the Archaeological Museum of Mystras and its Byzantine and Ecclesiastical exhibits.

Epidaurus

amp

Epidaurus is one of the most beautiful archaeological sites in all of Greece.  The drive is about 2 hours (125 kilometers) southwest from Athens. Here, at the temple of Asclepius, Greeks paid tribute to their God of medicine and healing and asked for remedies for various illnesses. However, the main attraction is the breathtaking 3rd century, 14,000 seat limestone amphitheater.

Even through Roman occupation, Epidaurus retained its circular “orchestra”, and is close to acoustically perfect: from the top seats you may be able to hear someone whispering on the stage down below. In July and August the amphitheater returns to its prior grandeur when the Epidaurus Festival presents ancient Greek classics – including the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides – in Modern Greek.

 Stavros

beach

If you are partial to rocky hills, scented with wild herbs and decorated with geraniums, sandwiched between volcanic coastlines and olive groves and vineyards heavy with fruit, you will want to visit Stavros. Located about 30 minutes north of the city of Chania on the northwest side of Crete’s Akrotiri Peninsula, there are a few small and well-manicured “apart-hotels”, but Stavros has yet to be overrun by tourists.

Visit many serene inlet beaches with clear-as-glass turquoise waters where you can rent two lounge chairs and umbrella for about 5 Euro per day – a relative bargain for Europe. This is also the perfect area for long and easy road runs (or walks), where you will see an abundance of bougainvillea, as well as oleander, palm and orange trees. Drop by Christiana’s tavern on Stavros Beach for some fresh grilled fish, Cretan cheese pies and a glass of retsina; owner/chef Maria may let you have your picture taken with the Oscar™ for cinematography won by “Zorba the Greek,” which was filmed here.  Many of the locals were extras in the movie, and Walter Lassally, who won the treasured gold statue, has a home nearby.

Gorge of Aradena

gorge

If you have even a bit of experience with nature walks, and little or no vertigo, hiking the Gorge of Aradena is an ideal alternative to the better-known Samaria Gorge and its almost 2,000 daily visitors. Begin your hike at the small beach of Marmara, which is an hour’s walk along the coast from the town of Loutro (about 80 kilometers  – 1 ¾ hours – south of Chania on the island of Crete) and then head uphill – it is easier to walk up than down – towards the southern slopes of the White Mountains.

The main section of the trail is just less than 3 hours long, and includes a cliff-side passage which can be traversed via a 10 meter high metal ladder; if you do suffer a fear of heights, take the alternative path with its handrail. Towards the end of the trek, cross the 138-meter high Aradena Bridge for a stunning view of the gorge below.

Kameiros

kam

After a 30 kilometer drive west from the city of Rhodes, on the island of Rhodes, including the final stretch up a switchback road on a tranquil, pine-filled mountain, you will arrive at the ancient Minoan ruins at Kameiros. Inhabited since 2000 B.C., Kameiros joined Lindos and Ialyssos in the 5th century B.C. to form the grand city-state of Rhodes. Kameiros, also known as the “Greek Pompeii,” was flattened by an earthquake in 226 B.C. and was ultimately abandoned in 142 A.D. after being destroyed by another. However, the town’s foundations were well-preserved under the debris from the second quake, protecting it from looters.

There are well-preserved temples, bath houses, stone staircases, store rooms, and private dwellings with great views of the Aegean Sea. You will also see the cistern that supplied approximately 400 residents with fresh water, and a highly developed drainage system. Unlike many archaeological sites in Greece, there is a reasonable amount of descriptive signage; as an added plus there are not any attempts at reconstruction.

Greece is hot and dry in the high season (July and August), so plan your outdoor sightseeing– with water bottle, hat and sun block – for first thing in the morning; leave your afternoons for relaxing or swimming.  In mountainous areas, such as Meteora and the Aradena Gorge, keep a sharp eye out for falling rocks, especially if it has recently rained or if there are goats or sheep above you. Lodging can be less expensive other times of the year, but call ahead if you plan to visit off-season as many places are closed at that time.

Top 10 Sexiest Beaches

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

1. KOH PHI PHI ISLAND, THAILAND

If you’ve seen The Beach, then you’ll know what limestone cliffs, turquoise waters and pristine white sand can do for romance. While the beach itself here has become something of a tourist trap since the film, it is still the ideal backdrop for some Summer loving.

 2. COLOMBIER BEACH, ST. BARTH’S

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why Colombier Beach is a sexy beach; accessible only by boat or a 25-minute hike along rocky terrain, the cove is all about blue skies, shimmering green water and flamingo-hued sand. While private yachts moor up at the cove’s entrance, you’ll be left largely to your own devices. We recommend bringing a picnic and cracking open a bottle of bubbly.

 3. PINK BEACH, ANTIGUA, CARIBBEAN

While movies such as Into The Blue and After The Sunset will have you thinking that Paradise Island in the Bahamas is the best place to get romantic on the sand, it’s not (unless you’re an exhibitionist, of course). Antigua’s Pink Beach offers a little privacy away from the madding crowds. Stretching eight miles and bordered by crystal-clear waters on one side and a handful of beautiful boutique hotels on the other, this is one picture-postcard sandbar. What’s more, the beach is only ever used by a few of the nearby hotels‘ guests.

 4. WILDCAT BEACH, CALIFORNIA, USA

Secluded Wildcat Beach is located a full 30 minutes from San Francisco and requires a five-minute walk, but it’s worth it. What’s more, you can build a bonfire (with the necessary license, of course) and admire huge tide-fall cascades down from the cliffs and onto the sand behind you.

5. MAJAHUITAS COVE, MEXICO

Accessible only by boat, swaying palms, pristine white sand and turquoise waters await you at Majahuitas Cove. Named after a yellow hibiscus-like flower, it’s brimming with enough plant and wildlife to create a stunning natural backdrop. Day-trippers tread the sands during the day, but we recommend checking in to the eight-room hotel beside the beach.

6. MONDELLO BEACH, PALMERO, ITALY

Lovers of seafood, tree-lined boulevards and luxury hotel resorts will love what Mondello Beach has to offer; in fact, lovers will love it full-stop. Classy Mondello Beach has all the makings of a passionate Italian love story with sun-drenched sand and the fresh waters of the Mediterranean, and is super clean.

 7. STORE BEACH, SYDNEY

While it may seem impossible within the locale of a big, bustling city, Store Beach is actually pretty isolated. Hidden by a rock formation, it can only be reached by boat. And because it’s part of Sydney Harbour National Park, it’s kept spotless too.

 8. SUNSET BEACH, OAHU, HAWAII

It doesn’t get much sexier than Hawaii‘s beaches, what with grass-skirt-wearing ladies and muscled surfer boys. However, few venture farther than Waikiki, which is where the crowds sip cocktails and get up to little else. Slip away to the North Shore’s Sunset Beach, where you’re certain to find a secluded spot.

 9. WHITE BAY BEACH, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

Stretching eight miles long and half-a-mile wide, there’s not much else to do on this gorgeous, picture-postcard island other than make out. It is a U-shaped piece of paradise.

 10. POLES BAY, KEA, GREECE

Forget about Greece‘s more popular islands and head out to the island of Kea, a beautiful beach just a ferry ride away from Athens. Because it is not included on the main ferry routes and only a select few know about it, you’ll practically have the place to yourselves. Once there, make your way to Poles Bay – a three-hour walk – and indulge in the twin sand beaches, rocky landscape and ancient ruins. Unspoiled, isolated and evocative; what more could you want ?

Are you addicted to partying on the weekends like most youngsters who enjoy a good nights drink? If you’re one of those who have a regular routine going to different clubs and pubs in your are, don’t restrict yourself to your local environment. We’ve done all the research for you and found the best cities to go crazy all night till dawn. Let your hair loose and experience some real parties across the globe.

Ibiza

1. Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza?s proudly claims itself to be the biggest party spot on the planet. Located off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea, the island draws hedonists from across the European continent.

The pre-partying starts at about 11 each night where the partygoers gather at bars to have drinks before heading out to the real party later on in the night. The big party doesn?t start until 2AM and last until 8. The main parties focus on techno music and dancing. At some of the world-famous clubs, like Espuma (Spanish for foam), foam is pumped out to the dance floor and can pile above sight level ? be sure to be dressed for the occasion. A lot of Ibiza veterans comment that the best aspect of the party atmosphere there is that partygoers aren?t so caught up in their outward appearance, but their ?inner? beauty.

After the night parties are the ?after hours? clubs which open at 8am and last until noon. After that, partygoers can return to their hotels and sleep it off or just head to the beach and get ready for another night of partying. Honestly, not a lot of sleep happens here. Check hotels in Ibiza through Ratestogo.

Sinners in Amsterdam

2. Amsterdam, Holland

Amsterdam is Europe?s party headquarters. It doesn?t matter what time of the year, in Amsterdam the party never stops. In Amsterdam party activities that are traditionally taboo in other countries are completely legal. Within the world-famous Red Light District, scantily clad women of all shapes, sizes, and colors openly display their wares. If participation isn?t your thing there are a huge variety of sex shows.

Escape - AmsterdamAmsterdam is also famous for its coffee shops. They don?t just serve coffee in these joints, they actually serve joints ? of the marijuana type. The good coffee shops will have a menu describing all the various types of marijuana available, and the effects of each type. Consuming marijuana is legal in the coffee shops and other designated areas, but don?t try doing this in undesignated parts of town where it is strictly forbidden.

The nightlife in Amsterdam is also excellent. It?s not uncommon for after-hours parties to last until noon here. There are numerous pubs and clubs. The most lively times of the week are Wednesday through Sunday while on Mondays and Tuesdays everyone tries to catch up on their sleep.

Pamplona

3. Pamplona, Spain

Overall, Spain takes the title as Europe?s best country for a party with 3 locations featured in this top-10 list and the Spanish city of Pamplona, made famous by Ernest Hemingway for the running of the bulls during the Festival of San Fermin, deserves mentioning.

The historic district is filled with relaxed bars sure to fit anyone?s fancy. Many of them won?t even have a sign advertising them as such, but feel free to wander from place to place, just as the locals do. Of course, Pamplona has its share of thumping night clubs also, as has become tradition in Spain. These clubs have strict dress codes and desire their partygoers to be of the beautiful type, so make sure a female is in your crew and dress to the nines to gain admittance. These clubs stay open until 6am. Check Pamplona hotels for more information.

Barcelona beach parties

4. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is another Spanish party headquarters. A breathtakingly beautiful city located in the North-East of Spain, Barcelona is home to great shopping, Gaudi architecture, beaches, and is a great place to party. Every kind of music is featured in the clubs here and the styles differ with the neighborhoods.

Clubs are located throughout the city, but one must be particularly careful of pickpockets in the central, ?gothic? area. Never leave your purse or bag unattended here. However, the bars here are worth checking out for the local flavor Barcelona has to offer. The best clubs are located along the waterfront area where music from techno to salsa can be heard well into the night. These clubs don?t open until midnight and the party doesn?t stop until morning.

Athens party

5. Athens, Greece

The Greeks have always known how to party. After all, the term ?hedonism? does find its roots in the Greek word for pleasure ? hedon. In Athens, many will notice that the working people go home for naps in the middle of the day. This is because the parties last until 4 o?clock the following morning. Along the beach in Glyfada are indoor/outdoor dance clubs that attract the top DJs from around the world.

Typically, Athens clubs are a little dressy (for men, anyway) where men may be required to wear slacks. More casual bars are located around the harbor area if strutting your stuff isn?t on the agenda.

However, while in Athens it is important to be wary of the ?tourist trap? bars located around the Plaka area. Preying particularly on men, women approach asking to buy drinks where the drink ends up being something quite expensive, like an entire bottle of Dom Perignon.

Stockholm6. Stockholm, Sweden

For the citizens of Stockholm, partying on the weekends is just not enough. Here, the Wednesday night party has become very common. The long sun-filled summer evenings and, conversely, the long winter nights in Scandanavia give the Swedes a strong commitment to a thriving nightlife.

Admission prices to the hippest clubs in the Stureplan area of Stockholm can be somewhat expensive, upwards of 70 Kronor ($11.07 US), but that is a small price to pay for a wonderful, memorable evening. Some of the most popular night spots include Kungstr?dgarden and Skansen. Many clubs stay open until 4 or even 5am. After a hectic night, you can crash at a last minute hotel in Stockholm.

Saint Tropez

7. St. Tropez, France

St. Tropez, widely known as the playground for the rich and famous and for its unmatched party scene, is located along the French Riviera on the Mediterranean Sea. Here it is quite probably to hobnob with the rich and famous in clubs like Les Caves du Roy in the Hotel Byblos and Bodega de Papagayo, which attracts a younger crowd. There is also an Irish club with plenty of Guinness and live music. For men, be sure to bring a lady with you so you may gain entrance to the clubs.

Obviously, travel to St. Tropez is quite expensive so those on tighter budgets may wish to lodge in Nice or Cannes and make an evening trip to St. Tropez with perhaps a single night?s stay (for recovery) in Lou Cagnard or Le Baron. Be sure to bring plenty of drinking money. You may even be able to find some alcohol at a hotel in St. Tropez.

Munich party

8. Munich, Germany

If Spain has a runner-up in the party country category, Germany is the runner-up. All German cities are populated with great bars and clubs. However, Munich is the best place to party in Germany. Home to a large college-age population, and world-famous for its beer-fueled Oktoberfest, Munich has the perfect mix for a good party.

Like other locations in Europe, evening gatherings start at bars before venturing to the late-night dance clubs where party-seekers meet up with others seeking the same. Then, it?s off to the clubs that stay open until 4am. Some of the more famous include Prinzregentenstrabe 1 (P1 for short), a stylish club for the beautiful people that at one time was a USO during WWII and 4004, aptly named for the 4004 square meters this club covers. Here a few hotels nearby in Munich.

Florence

9. Florence, Italy

Forget the boring old Eternal City, Florence is where it?s at if you are looking to party. Home to a large population of students, the prime partying age, Florence is full of young people venturing out for their taste of freedom. The drinking age is 18 here, so the scene is definitely young.

Wine flows freely at bars and clubs that stay open until 3am ? quite late by Italian standards. The best night spots are located in the Oltrarno, south of the Arno River and in the Piazza della Signoria. Dress style at the bars and clubs here is quite stylish and leaning towards the conservative. Freshen up at your Florence hotel before going out for a long party.

Budapest nightclubs

10. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is definitely an up and comer and is not usually thought of in lists of the best places to party in Europe. Budapest has come a long way since the oppressive Communist regime was deposed in 1989. During advertised ?club nights? dance clubs stay open until 4am and feature DJs from around the world. Some of the more interesting clubs include A38, an old Ukrainian stone-carrying ship refurbished and permanently moored in the Danube and the Bahnhof Music Club featuring talented local DJs and a dance floor packed with the beautiful people.

Budapest also has quite a few casinos along the Danube river; the area is known locally as the Dunakorz?. These are usually of the high brow type, are located in luxury hotels, and require formal dress.

Ten Best Nude Beaches in the World

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Below are 10 of the best beaches for baring all. All details are taken from Bare Beaches, which lists over 200 other popular spots for nude bathing around the world.

1. Leucate Plage, France

Mediterranean coast, north of Perpignan

This superb bare beach has 1 km of fine golden sand, the classic Mediterranean beach. The water is normally calm and the shore shelves gently into the sea making it popular with families. Three naturist resorts share the coastline but the beach is open to all and there’s plenty of space for first-time skinny-dippers and lifelong nudists alike.

Go north from Perpignan on the main N9 and turn right on to the D83, signposted Port Bacares. After 9 kms turn left on to the D627, drive through Port Leucate and the bare beach is on the right. Park on the road – easy public access between Aphrodite Village and Club Oasis, the naturist resorts.

2. Playa Es Pregons Gran, Balearic islands

Majorca south coast

This wonderful little bare bay has a perfect crescent of fine yellow sand, washed by a sea so transparent it looks more like the Caribbean. There are no beach bars so bring your picnic and drinks. It’s the jewel in the crown of the popular Es Trenc beach area.

The route to the beach is a pleasant 15 minute walk along the shore, heading north from the resort town of Colonia Sant Jordi. Start at the Hotel Marques Del Palmer, and it’s the third bay along. The fourth bay, if you walk further, also happens to be a bare beach, part of the much larger Es Trenc beach.

3. Haulover Beach, Florida USA

Sunny Isles, north Miami

Situated in the south of the ‘Sunshine State’, this bare sandy beach has a huge following of visitors from across the globe. With glorious weather for most of the year and the vibrant city of Miami on the doorstep, it’s not difficult to see why. The bare area is more than 800 yards long and has its own lifeguards and unobtrusive police patrols. Refreshments, sunbeds and umbrellas are available.

The beach is at Haulover Beach Miami-Dade county regional park, on Collins Avenue (A1A), just north of fashionable Bal Harbour. There is a large car park ($5) right by the beach.

4. Vera Playa, Spain

Costa Almeria

This is Spain’s capital of bare bathing. The long wide sandy beach is popular in summer and has a big choice of naturist accommodation. Beach bars, sunbeds, pedalos and yes, if you really want to try the naturist cliché, beach volleyball are all available. Almeria has the hottest and driest climate in the country, so the beach season is almost year-round. Most European nationalities park their bottoms here, giving it a cosmopolitan and friendly atmosphere.

Take the coast road north from Garrucha, through Puerto Rey, and Vera Playa is well signposted after a further 1.5 kms.

5. Banana Beach, Greece

Skiathos, near Koukounaries, on the south-west coast

Banana beach is the collective name for three lovely sandy bays well loved by nude bathers. Before you ask, the name refers to the fact the beaches are yellow and curved. View photos of sunbathers at this beach here.

During peak season bare bathers mainly use Little Banana, one of the smaller coves, as clothed holidaymakers descend on the main beach. Little Banana is often called the best bare beach in Greece, although there is plenty of competition for the accolade. There is a bus terminus and car park at the end of the Koukounaries road, coming from Skiathos town. The footpath to Banana takes 15 mins through olive groves.

6. Valalta, Croatia

Istria, near Rovinj

If you feel the need for a truly naked de-stress, Valalta is everything you could wish for. It’s so good the nudist campsite here was voted the best in Croatia last year – among all sites, not just bare ones. With two miles of sand and rock beaches, including secluded coves, lined by olive trees and vineyards, this nude beach and village are well loved by bare beach connoisseurs.

The beach is on the Istrian peninsula, 60 miles south of Trieste and five miles from Rovinj. You can visit for the day (€2 entry) or book holidays through UK nude beach specialist Peng Travel (0845 345 8345) or www.valalta.hr

7. Playa de Maspalomas, Canary Islands

Near Playa del Ingles, southern Gran Canaria

Hundreds of acres of sand dunes, looking just like the Sahara, frame the beautiful beach between Maspalomas and the popular resort of Playa del Ingles. It’s 3 kms from one end to the other and over 1 km deep. The bare areas, like the swimsuited ones, have sunbeds and umbrellas for hire. For a quieter spot, walk into the vast expanse of dunes, but be careful not to get lost!

You can walk to the bare beach areas from either end, although the walk from Maspalomas town is slightly shorter.

8. Euronat, France

Atlantic coast, north-west of Bordeaux

The south-west coast of France is almost one vast nude beach, stretching over 100 miles from Biarritz to the Gironde. Among stiff competition, the nude resort beach of Euronat stands out for its clean golden sand, supervised swimming and friendly atmosphere. Thousands of happy families gather here, and the beach is open to both nudist campers and day visitors alike. Other highly regarded resort beaches heading south are Montalivet CHM, La Jenny and Arnaoutchot.

From the seaside town of Montalivet-les-Bains, drive north on the D102 coast road. After 3 kms the road turns sharply right inland. Park and walk on to the beach – the main bare area is to the right.

9. Plakias Beach, Greece

Plakias town, south-west Crete

A fabulous setting of cliffs, mountains and a huge sweep of golden sand make this beach a wonderful place for all-over tanning and fine snorkelling. The sea shelves gently, making it suitable for families, and there are showers available. Refreshments are brought to the beach in season, and umbrellas are available.

The nude area is the last section of the beach, to the left as you face the sea, and unsurprisingly it is often the most popular part of the whole bay.

10. Les Grottes Plage, France

Ile du Levant, Mediterranean

This gem of a beach on the magical island of Levant is reached by an easy coastal footpath 10 mins walk from the quayside. A small natural cove of white sand slides gently into the turquoise sea, providing excellent swimming and snorkelling. The easiest way to get here is by ferry from Le Lavandou, between St Tropez and Toulon.

Seventy years ago Ile du Levant was the birthplace of nude leisure in France. Today, there is a tiny resident community and lots of holiday accommodation. Minimal clothing is normally worn in the village of Heliopolis, but the rest can be enjoyed as nature intended.

Budget Tips For Group Trips

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

What does traveling have to do with the recent economic crisis? As long as you know how to get the best deals, you can make vacations something you can do often enough. It’s all about being smart and doing the right research so you can make the most of what you’re getting and stretching your budget down to the very last dime. Here are a few suggestions that could save you:

For the Ride

- If you can take the car instead of the plane, go for it. You can all chip in for gas. Plus, the road trip gives you the privacy that you need and enough time to plan and bond before reaching your destination.

- Apply for frequent flyer miles. With enough trips under your belt, you could actually accumulate enough points that allow you to go to far-flung areas.

- If you’re going on a cruise, check if they offer group rates and see if you can get bigger discounts when you have more people signing up for the trip.

For the Hotel and Accommodation

- No doubt, five-star hotels are way more expensive, but like anything, it becomes cheaper when you have two or more people staying in a room.

- You don’t have to limit your choices with the ones in the area. If you have a car with you, you can actually get a room in a nearby town. If you want to head for the beach, you just have to give your group fifteen or thirty minutes leeway. That’s not really much when you see how much you can save.

- Camp out instead. While the planning can be more of a hassle, the time you’ll spend outdoors can be just as rewarding.

For Your Meals

- Forget about those expensive restaurants. Ask a local where you can get the meals for a fraction of the usual cost.

- Forget the usual fare of fast-food as well. Instead, make friends with those who live in the area. Who knows, they could actually invite you to feast in their homes instead and show you some local hospitality. This ought to be safe as well if you go in a big group.

- You can also bring canned goods and easy-to-prepare meals with you. Some inns offer a mini-kitchenette where you can do the actual cooking. When you get things in bulk and do the preparation yourselves, you can spend the extra money you’ll save on other luxury items instead.

For Souvenirs

- Prepare a list of people you need to give to. Otherwise, postcards will do.

- You can also just take your camera along and just put them all in an album that you can always access whenever you want to reminisce. Plus, you save yourself from all that extra junk because chances are, you really won’t get that souvenir that you’ve purchased.

Follow these tips and stretch your money. You’ll see that vacations are more special because of the memories you get, and not the amount you’ve purchased.

Best working holiday jobs

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

To really get under the skin of a place, and to finance the onward journey, why not consider a working holiday? Quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to see the world, here are ten suggestions for how to wisely spend your time while traveling.

Leading tours

The best thing about leading tour groups is being paid to sightsee in a foreign country. Working every day with locals also allows you to get under a country’s skin. As a tour leader you’re responsible for the smooth running of the trip and the satisfaction of your group. Most operators require their leaders to speak a foreign language and to sign up for two or more seasons. You won’t be doing this job for the pay, but whatever you do earn will be in addition to free accommodation, return air fare and often free meals.

Companies such as Explore Adventure Holidays regularly recruit for people to lead tours worldwide; most will let you apply online.

Teaching English

If you’re reading this, then you already possess the prime qualification required for rewarding work overseas. The phenomenal popularity of the English language has created a huge demand for teachers. Those with formal teaching qualifications and experience can make a veritable career out of teaching, feted by foreign schools which pay airfares and look after work permits and paperwork. English teaching can also pay well: it’s possible to come home with savings after a year of work in Japan or South Korea, for example.www.i-to-i.com/tefl

Most education providers require you to have completed a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) course.

Au Pairing

There are few better ways to get cosy with a foreign culture than to live and work with a local family. Au pairing may not pay well, but most use it as an opportunity to master a language: fluency is priceless. Essentially, you have to love children, but most employers also prefer to employ single people with no dependents, who are aged between 17 and 27. You’ll need to prove that you’ve spent time caring for children – a job that’s not short on responsibility.www.bestaupairguide.com

Working in ski resorts

Working in a ski resort is less a job, more of a lifestyle. You’ll likely end up skiing all day and partying all night. Though competition is stiff , there are loads of opportunities to work in resorts: from instructing on the slopes to working behind the scenes in a chalet. You’ll need international instructor qualifications to work as an instructor, where the pay is modest but the cool factor’s high. Chalet staff cook and clean and though this work carries less kudos and cash, there is usually a great camaraderie among workers.www.whistlerblackcomb.com

Top resorts like Whistler hold recruiting sessions overseas for quality staff; check your fave snow spot online and carve up an opportunity.

Writing

Apart from heading to some exotic destination for inspiration to write that best-selling novel, journalism is probably the best known of the ‘proper jobs’ in which you can ensure some money dribbles into your account. If you’ve got a nose for news and can write, pitch a story to the editor responsible for the relevant section of an appropriate newspaper or magazine. Essentially, you need to be contactable and have the capacity to deliver on your pitch.

Pitch your travel stories to major newspapers or magazines, as these will have a budget for freelance stories.

Waiting/working in a bar

Whether you’re working the floor taking food orders in a bustling cafe or pulling pints in a village pub, this is people-focused work: it’s not known as the hospitality industry for nothin’. Though the hours can be long and the pay a pittance, you’ll likely come across a lot of locals, and tips can plump out an average earning. Most establishments require that you have some experience, particularly for working in a bar (changing kegs and mixing cocktails).www.newyorkbartendingschool.com

Make sure you have the skills and qualifications required, available from places like the New York Bartending School.
More:

Cooking/working as a kitchen hand

If you’re a maestro on the burners (and you’re qualified), you could secure work as a chef in a restaurant or a hotel. Those without qualifications can still get in the kitchen: prepping food, flipping burgers or doing the washing up (affectionately known as ‘dish pigging’). Working in restaurants and hotels often puts you in touch with other travellers, and offers a casual environment in which to earn a bit of cash. While washing up might not make you wealthy, it will give you soft hands.www.gumtree.com is the best site for kitchen-hand jobs in major Western cities.www.wwoof.org

Farming work

If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty there is loads of labour that allows you to work outdoors – improving your tan while you work. You might pick up work fruit picking or planting crops; in all cases long hours and physical exertion are involved. Farm wages are generally low, but accommodation is thrown in and you’ll have few opportunities to fritter away your earnings. You don’t need any particular skills, just endurance and determination.

Get inspired on where to go by browsing the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms website.

Volunteering

Get that warm and fuzzy feeling from doing something positive for someone or something you care about while gaining an insight into a foreign place and chalking up experience. Volunteering opportunities are many and varied, and can include professional placements, joining an expedition and administration for a non-governmental organisation. Costs to the volunteer also vary according to the activity and length of stay, but bank on contributing to food and sundry expenses.www.volunteerabroad.com lists hundreds of volunteering opportunities around the world

Yachting Crew

Working for your passage can certainly put the wind in your sails. Getting on board a yacht will likely get you into nooks and crannies that most of us only dream about, particularly around the islands of the Aegean Sea, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean. Apart from some nifty knot tying, you need to work well in a team and under pressure. Tasks vary according to the vessel, but generally involve rigging, cleaning and maintenance. It’s common for crew to contribute a small amount of cash to cover food and sundry expenses.www.globalcrewnetwork.com

What do you actually do overseas?

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

My Thai friend Seerung was telling me recently about her compatriots’ attitude towards food. “I think we are obsessed,” she admitted. “If we’re not eating food, we’re talking about food. We’re asking our friends what they have been eating. We plan lunch while we’re eating breakfast. We plan dinner while we’re eating lunch. It’s crazy.”

I know how she feels. I too spend an inordinate amount of time either eating food or talking about eating food. Particularly when I’m travelling.

I only realised this the other day, when I decided to tally up how I spend my time while I’m travelling.

Taking a trip is easy – you jump on the plane, mess around for a few weeks, and before you know it you’re back at work and it’s like the whole thing never happened. But it’s interesting to think about what you actually do during those couple of weeks away.

Going by the information most guide books give you, you’d think you’d spend about 10 per cent of your time on trains and planes, 20 per cent sleeping, 20 per cent eating, and 50 per cent wandering through churches, temples and museums.

But I reckon the reality is a bit different, so – using an average two-week block of travel – I decided to figure out exactly what I do on these overseas jaunts. Here goes …

Sleeping – 29 per cent
Holidays seem to be about the one time in my life when I don’t want to sleep a lot. The way I see it, it’s time wasted. It’s like when I was a kid playing Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiago – it’s frustrating when you have to sleep instead of getting out there and enjoying life (or catching loose-lipped, globe-trotting supervillains). So it’s a bit disappointing to realise that’s what I do the most of.

Eating and/or drinking – 25 per cent
That’s right, like Seerung and her Thai friends, I reckon I spend a solid quarter of my holidays either eating food, or planning where next to eat food, or talking about where we last ate food, or sitting in bars drinking. And probably talking about food. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Travelling – 22 per cent
This includes everything – planes, trains, buses, tuk-tuks, taxis, ferries, rickshaws, camels and elephants. It also includes waiting around in airports, train stations etc. It’s amazing to think that you shell out so much cash to visit these incredible places, but what you spend the bulk of your holiday doing is the actual act of travelling.

Wandering aimlessly – 8 per cent
I seem to dedicate at least an hour or so a day to just tramping around on foot with no particular destination in mind. Sometimes I come across amazing things I never thought I’d see. Other times, I just get lost. Which leads me to …

Finding my way home again – 3 per cent
Being a bloke, I’m morally obligated to attempt to do this by myself, without asking for anyone’s help. So I need to devote a bit more time to it than others might have to. (Hint: always carry a card with your hostel‘s address on it.)

Looking at churches/temples/museums/art galleries – 4 per cent
Only 4 per cent? Am I some uncultured heathen? Maybe. But I maintain that there’s only so much you can learn about a country from inside four walls. Get in, look at the famous painting/archway/sculpture/pottery, and get out. Maybe grab something to eat?

Sitting in internet cafes – 2.5 per cent
Sorry people, but these comments don’t moderate themselves …

Shopping – 2 per cent
I don’t like shopping at home, so it stands to reason that I wouldn’t want to do it while I’m overseas. And I reckon a pretty solid chunk of this 2 per cent could be put down to “being dragged around shops by certain other people”.

Going to sporting events – 1.5 per cent
I’d devote a lot more time to this if I could, but it’s not the easiest thing to organise while you’re travelling. Still, if there’s a football/ice hockey/cricket/sumo wrestling match on, I’ll be there.

Standing in line – 1.5 per cent
For banks, for money exchanges, for visas, for art galleries, for toilets, for food, for buses, for taxis, for food again … Granted, some countries’ approach to queuing is a bit more physical than others’, but you still spend a fair amount of time waiting in line when you travel.

Lying in the sun – 1 per cent
What can I say, I have a pasty white complexion – devote any more time than this to lying around under than big yellow orb and I’d spend the rest of my holiday shedding skin like a snake.

Swearing I’ll never drink again – 0.5 per cent
That’s about 15 minutes every morning. Not sure what happens after that.

Everyone’s different – what do you devote your time to while you’re on the road ?

New Zealand makes Best in Travel guide top 10

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

NEW Zealand has been named one of the top 10 countries in the world to visit next year.New Zealand

Australia didn’t make the grade in the Lonely Planet’s new popular Best in Travel guide, although the south-west of Western Australia won a spot in the top 10 regions worldwide.

The travel bible named New Zealand on the basis of the adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

The authors said the last time they checked, “the land of Maori and hobbits certainly didn’t need repairing”.

The annual guide, which drew on the knowledge of Lonely Planet’s staff, named the country’s most inspiring activities as flying over Fiordland, kayaking in Abel Tasman National Park and paragliding over Queenstown – all South Island activities.

But the North Island‘s Tongariro National Park, prized for its iconic one-day crossing hike, also rated a mention.

Other countries named in the top 10 were El Salvador, Germany, Greece, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Portugal, Suriname and the USA.
