  • (CNNGo) — If hell is other people, maybe you can find heaven where other people aren’t.

These places, though not entirely devoid of human life, offer some of the world’s most beautiful me-time fixes.

    1. Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse, Mt. Everest

    Location: Tibet Autonomous Region, China

It’s freezing, there’s barely any oxygen and it has claimed more than 200 lives. But you don’t actually need to hit Mt. Everest’s summit to get away from it all.

Head for the North Face and you’ll pass by Rongbuk Monastery. At an elevation of 5,100 meters (16,732 feet), it’s an anxiety-settling 3,000 meters (9,842 feet) short of the death zone.

Opposite is the guesthouse, a basic, electricity-rationed, rustic little property where you can gaze upon Everest’s face and experience all the internal contemplation it brings on without having to risk life and limb.

Rate: Less than $10 per night. Information at windhoursetour.com.

Rongbuk Monastery, Everest Base Camp, Tsang, Tibet, China

    2. Great White Lake, Mongolia

Location: Central Mongolia, between Tariat town and Terkhiin Tsaagan Nuur’s eastern shore

Book yourself in at a ger camp beside Central Mongolia’s Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, or “Great White Lake,” in the lush Khangai Mountain region and you’ll wonder why people ever felt the need to congregate in cities.

Located in the Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park, the area is pockmarked with volcanic rock. The lake itself was created by lava flow from an eruption thousands of years ago.

Even if there are others in your camp, go for a walk and within 20 minutes it’ll just be you, a vast expanse of land and a few pesky flies.

Rates: Less than $20 per night. Multi-day horseback tours and camps can be booked via onthegotours.com, or you can hike from camp to camp.

CNNGo: Visiting the famous in Hong Kong’s cemeteries

    3. Kettuvallam houseboat, India

Location: State of Kerala, southern India

They look like giant wicker baskets, but the kettuvallam houseboats that ply the many channels and backwaters of the Indian state of Kerala are floating luxury hotel rooms.

The boats can accommodate up to six guests and while you can disembark if the need grabs you (finished your novel too quickly?), it’s just as easy to remain on the water and let attentive crews cater to you for several days.

Rates: $210 for 22 hours. Book via thehouseboatskerala.com.

    4. Wilson Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Location: Off the coast of Gladstone, Australia

If only Robinson Crusoe had it so good. Just 12 guests are allowed on this five-acre island at any one time, so no need to run out at dawn to reserve the sun loungers.

Guests have access to a library and various resort-style amenities, such as toiletries, housekeeping service and food and drinks.

If you book in January, you may have to share the place with green and loggerhead turtles, which crawl onto shore to lay their eggs.

Rates: From $680 per night for one of six permanent luxury tents. Book at wilsonisland.com.

    5. Takaro Peace Resort, New Zealand

    Location: South Island, New Zealand

Takaro Peace Resort is so out of the way that guests used to have to fly directly to this wellness spa and relaxation lodge. Thanks to a new private road, it’s now even easier to ignore other people.

As well as holing yourself up in one of the resort’s 10 luxury feng shui-designed chalets, you can go on glow-worm cruises and walks on the magnificent 2,000-acre private estate.

Rate: From $190 (for standard chalet) per person per night. Book at takarolodge.com.

    6. International Dhamma Hermitage, Thailand

    Location: Chaiya, Thailand

If you find it hard to find silence for 10 minutes during “normal” life, you might want to book a stay at International Dhamma Hermitage, a meditation resort attached to the Wat Suan Mokkh forest monastery 640 kilometers (about 400 miles) south of Bangkok.

Every month the resort hosts 10-day meditation retreats, during which participants take on vows of silence.

Turns out running your mouth is not an easy habit to break.

You get up early and fast between noon and dawn. Sitting on “luxury beds or seats” is a no-no.

Guests must register in person on the last day of the previous month.

Rate: $66 for 10 days. For more info go to suannmokkh-idh.org.

    7. Alert, Canada

    Location: Nunavut, Canada

Located just 817 kilometers (507 miles) from the North Pole, and more than 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) from the nearest city, Alert is the last stop for civilization in the northern hemisphere. In the 2006 census, its permanent population was five.

Alert is mainly home to military and meteorological personnel and installations. The only feasible way to get there is by hitching a ride the next time the Canadian military sends a plane.

There are no tourist facilities and you’ll have to bring your own food. And sleeping bag. Then build your own igloo.

    8. Kulala Wilderness Camp, Namibia

    Location: Namib Desert, Namibia

If by becoming a recluse your intention is to feel small and insignificant, you need look no further than the Sossusvlei in the southern part of the Namib Desert. Sossusvlei roughly translates as “marsh of no return,” and that pretty much tells the story of this remote spot.

It’s a dead, dry, Dali-esque place, with the Deadvlei, a ghostly white clay pan area full of dead acacia trees, set against burning red sand dunes.

Book stays at the Kulala Wilderness Camp, within a private 37,000-hectare reserve, throughsafariadventurecompany.com.

Rate: From $300 per adult per night.

In the Loisaba Wilderness, outdoor “star beds” expose you to the Kenyan elements (you do get a mosquito net). The unique beds, which jut out over the Ewaso Ng’iro River, are a joint venture between Loisaba and the local Laikipiak Maasai.

Traditional Samburu and Laikipiak Maasai warriors guide and look after you during your wilderness stay. Each bed-lodging can accommodate two to four people.

10 Best Places to Live for Escaping World Conflict

    Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Where would you be the safest if World War 3 broke out tomorrow? Perhaps it’s a grim subject, but safety and distance from world conflict can be a motivating factor in your choice to expatriate. At the very least, conflict around the world can weigh heavy on the soul, and it’s nice to know there are some places still left in the world where you might be left in peace. Thus, we’ve assembled a list of the 10 best places to live if you want to escape world conflict.

    10. Switzerland

Switzerland’s long history of neutrality and its tucked away location among the valleys of the Alps still make it a safe bet, even despite having a high number of bordering nations. It helps that neighboring Austria is also considered a neutral nation.

    9. Costa Rica

    Costa Rica

Costa Rica has a stable democracy, a disbanded military and a national policy of neutrality. It also ranks highly on the Global Peace Index, Happy Planet Index, and Life Satisfaction Index. Although it sits in the middle of a tumultuous region, there are far worse places to sit in peace as the world goes down in flames all around.

    8. Papua New Guinea

    papua

There are regions of Papua New Guinea that are still being discovered for the first time. The canopy covered, mountainous nation contains some of the most isolated places in the world. Tuck yourself away in a nook here and it may be one of the few places left where you can completely insulate yourself from the outside world.

    7. Canada

    Canada

Canada is the second largest nation in the world, yet it only shares a land border with one other country– the U.S.A.– and it is a peaceful border. That means there is a great expanse to escape to, if need be. Furthermore, Canada has few world enemies, ranks consistently high on the Global Peace Index, and is relatively homogeneous.

    6. Seychelles

    Seychelles

Aside from being safely isolated from the rest of the world in the middle of the Indian Ocean, this beautiful island nation is a great place to forget about your worries. Isolation is the key here. And conflict is as transparent as the water.

    5. Finland

    finland

Finland has a long history of desiring to stay out of international conflicts, is recognized as neutral and always ranks in the top 10 of the Global Peace Index. It’s northerly location also typically means the remote areas of this country are a perfect place to disappear.

    4. Tuvalu

    Tuvalu

Isolated in the middle of Micronesia, Tuvalu is among the safest and most remote places in the world. It is the third least populated country on Earth, and the forth smallest. There are only a few places more distant from the world’s strife than Tuvalu.

    3. Iceland

    iceland

Iceland, of course, has no borders, has remote locations, is stable as a country and has virtually no world enemies. Its people are happy and the nation always ranks highly on the Global Peace Index. If world conflict erupts, Iceland is one of the few stable nations in the world unlikely to get caught up in the middle.

    2. Bhutan

    Bhutan

Landlocked among the Himalaya mountains, Bhutan is one of the most isolated nations in the world. It also showcases one of the most stable balances in the world between moderization and retention of ancient culture. Its religious population believes in peaceful resolution to all conflict, and although it sits in a troubled region, it remains protected by its geography.

    1. New Zealand

    New Zealand

New Zealand might be the most isolated and expansive fully developed nation in the world. It shares no borders, sits relatively distant from any other nation, has no real national enemies, has a safe democracy and a diverse landscape with many remote places to hide away within. Furthermore, it ranked #1 on the Global Peace Index in 2009.

    Canada’s Travel Highlights

    Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

To all you Canadians out there, tell me what your number one city is in Canada? Now this can vary in how you categorize it, but as far as backpacking and sightseeing goes, what is you favorite place?
I am one of those backpackers who probably traveled more in different countries rather than my own. Considering how much I love traveling you would think I would have seen more of Canada, but I haven’t. I think the number one reason for this is due to how expensive and far everything is. Finding a flight from Toronto to Vancouver that is below $600-700 is not likely. Plus getting to places within Canada, does not take hours it takes days or weeks. Although there are many places in Canada that I still want to see.

Here is my list of a few of Canada’s highlights.

    1. Prince Edward Island
A place really to relax and gets that feeling of going back in time is P.E.I. The green pastures and the cliffs filled with red-soil with the sea breeze in your face is something you wish you could see and do everyday. With the small town feeling and local
people chatting around you is nothing like you will experience in a big city.

    2. Kelowna, B.C
Considering how most people think Canada is cold, well take a little trip to Kelowna, It is one of those city’s that will make you feel like you are in a desert in the middle of the summer. It is located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies in the Okanogan Valley. In the middle of the winter, where everything that surrounds you is freezing cold, well there is Kelowna where mild temperatures stay for the winter months.

    3. Quebec City
Now if you haven’t gone to France before, well take a trip to Quebec City instead. It is like taking a little tour around France, but in the middle of Canada. The old part of the city is surrounded by old, stonewalls that once protected the city from the British Navy. Also the city is famous for Chateaux Frontenac that over looks the St.Lawrence River.

    4. Banff, Alberta
I once spent the summer in Calgary and not once did I visit Banff. Yes, I know kind of crazy. Banff is were many tourists outside of Canada go to, only because it is so well known. No matter what season you see Banff in, there is always something to see and do. Some of the highlights of Banff are the wildlife, hiking, skiing, seeing the Banff Springs Hotel, and taking advantage of the outdoor hot springs.

    5. Lake Louise, Alberta
If you are near Banff, another wonderful sight to see is Lake Louise. It is looks like a picture; you might think that you are seeing something very fake. It is located deep in the Canadian Rockies, with thousand-year-old glaciers in the distance. The lake is very similar to the sea, it is turquoise. It would be the perfect for a camping trip!

    6. Ottawa, Ontario
Now hear me out, yes most Canadians have been to the capital city of Canada, Ottawa. But most people aren’t all that impressed from it. Only because it is one of Canada’s; smaller cities compared to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Although, it is a wonderful place to soak up all the Canadian culture. There is Parliament Hill, RCMP March, many museums, and the canal of Rideau to see.

    7. Niagara Falls, Ontario
I know many people who have seen it once and wouldn’t return, well the reason for that is because it’s like any wonder of the world, it is a tourist hey day! But it is something magical. With the breeze of the water in you’re face and staring into an amazing view it is something wonderful. I love the falls but as far as the city goes, it isn’t anything special. But for those who have not seen it, it is a must on your travel list!!

Victoria Falls – The Smoke That Thunders

    Tags: , , , , , , ,

    victoriaFalls

My high school history teacher was an Englishman by the name of Emil Beth. He was the quintessential educator of the 1960′s. A tough disciplinarian, with a wry sense of humor, he instilled in us a love, a passion even, for the study of history. He had us go into the battlefield with – or against – Napoleon at Waterloo. We wept with Ferdinand Magellan as he passed safe and unharmed through the treacherous straights of Cape Horn on his circumnavigation of Earth.

”We, the people” marveled with Thomas Jefferson at the completeness of the American Constitution. And we also tracked through darkest Africa with the intrepid Henry Morton Stanley until we too could say “Dr. Livingstone I presume.” In those days, I would have followed him to the furthest corners of the earth. But to my sorrow, at the end of 10th grade, Emil Beth left to pursue a new life in Canada. On his last day at school he gathered us together and said: “Gentlemen (even though we were all of fifteen years old he always called us that, or by some personal nickname), if there is but one thing you must do in this life, go and see Victoria Falls.”

After I turned 50, I started reconnecting with old friends with whom I had lost contact, and I searched out my old history teacher. Thanks to the internet I tracked him down to Port McNeill, a small town near the northern tip of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. In a 2-hour conversation that ranged from history to philosophy, I reminded him of his charge 35 years earlier, and that I had indeed fulfilled it. I’d been to see Victoria Falls.

I made the journey to Victoria Falls via overnight train from Bulawayo – Zimbabwe’s second largest city. Second-class travel on Zimbabwe Rail is an experience in its own right, which I don’t particularly recommend to the uninitiated. However, a twenty dollar bill and a handshake with the conductor found me in a compartment by myself, and the regular beat of the tracks combined with the slow rocking of the steam-powered train, and I was off to sleep in a flash.

I arrived at Victoria Falls station – reminded me of something out of a spaghetti western – early in the morning. The first thing that you see as you step off the train is the misty spray hanging over the rain forest, along with the overwhelming rumble of the falls: Mosi-oa-Tunya – The Smoke that Thunders – as it’s called by the locals. It’s an easy distance from the station to the entrance of the Victoria Falls National Park.

There I was handed a plastic mackintosh and off I traipsed into the rain forest. The walk is drenching but exhilarating, the rumble turns into an ear-shattering roar, and then all of a sudden the rain forest ends and there you stand, face to face with this expansive panorama that literally takes your breath away. I was so shocked by the enormity of this spectacle that I was only able to breathe in. I couldn’t exhale! Victoria Falls are over a mile wide and more than 100m high. The racket and the spray and the sunshine and the rainbow overwhelm you completely, and the distance between you and this natural wonder of the world is all of 200 feet!

You can almost reach out and touch it! In comparison you experience Niagara Falls from close but only from the side in a commercialized environment, and the Iguacu is seen from further away. Here, you are up close and extremely personal with the largest natural wonder on the planet. And what a wonder it is! There isn’t an adjective that’s sufficiently powerful to describe the feeling: awe-struck hardly begins to perhaps come close, maybe. Communication between people is by yelling because of the overpowering growl as hundreds of thousands of gallons of water plunge every minute from the Zambezi River an almost touchable distance opposite you into the abyss below.

I stayed there for a few hours just taking it in and then returned to the Victoria Falls hotel, completely drenched through. After a shower and a change of clothes, I headed for the lounge where I enjoyed a most wonderful Pm’s Number 1 Cup cocktail with lemonade, garnished with cucumber and cherry. There in the lounge I heard of the moonbow from one of the waiters, a local young man who went by the name of Goodness (the meaning that Africans attach to names is worth an entire article all by itself). Everyone has seen a rainbow, he said, but how many have seen a moonbow? “Tonight there’s a full moon. Go out to the falls again tonight,” he encouraged me, “and you’ll see something you have never ever seen before.”

He was right. I had never seen it before or ever since. For here, where the spray of the falls rises to a height of over 400 meters, on a clear full-moonlit night, the moonbow is an once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. You’ll never be able to forget it!
