The world’s best city beaches

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Liz Porter

One of the best … Copacabana beach, Rio de Janeiro.

Copacabana, Rio De Janeiro

With Sugarloaf Mountain in the background, this four-kilometre stretch of beach (pictured) is the place where Brazilian beach culture — and the G-string bikini — was born. Crowded with overtanned men and women in tiny swimsuits, its attractions include the landmark Copacabana Palace Hotel and countless beach bars. Its waters are calmer than those off the neighbouring beach of Ipanema.

Repulse Bay, Hong Kong

On the island’s south coast, this crescent-shaped beach is a bus ride from Central. Watched over by statues of Taoist gods Tin Hau and Kwun Yum, and the houses and apartments of the super-rich on the hills above, the beach is packed on weekends, although swimmers can escape by paddling out to offshore rafts. Film buffs often take the 20-30 minute seaside promenade to Deep Water Bay, the setting of the 1955 film Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, while those in search of a quieter experience opt for a train or ferry to Lantau Island.

Praia do Guincho, Lisbon

A glorious white sandy beach north-west of the city and a magnet for surfers, windsurfers, kitesurfers and sunset photographers, this beach is part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and was immortalised in the pre-titles section of the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. It’s a 45-minute train ride from Lisbon to Cascais and then a 20-minute bus ride.

Wannsee, Berlin

This sandy “beach” is a man-made stretch on the shores of a lake and the water is murky and relatively warm. It’s a 30-minute trip from the city centre but on a baking hot sumnmer’s day, it’s the only way to cool off. And, with a large section set aside for nude bathing, it offers an interesting insight into local leisure culture. The resort here has its own complex history, with the Nazis critical of the “unGerman” design of the 1930 lido building that overlooks the water. The nearby Wannsee villa was the site of the infamous 1942 conference that designed Hitler’s “final solution”.

Bondi Beach, Sydney

Even if it weren’t a convenient eight kilometres from the city, this stretch of beach would be worth visiting. Noted for its surf, restaurants and bars — especially Bondi Icebergs, where diners feel as if they’re floating over the ocean — its southern end is the starting point of an exhilarating cliff-top walk that winds six kilometres past the beautiful beaches of Tamarama, Bronte and Clovelly and on to Coogee.

Attractions in Berlin

Tags: , , , , ,

In the past century, Berlin has undergone more identity shifts than Bob Dylan. To many people, Berlin evokes unfortunate images of World War II or stereotyped images of lederhosen , but the reality is that Berlin is a city of the 21st century, brimming with vibrance. A good way to get over the jet lag is to go up to the glass cupola in the building, which provides a good “starter” view of the city. Adjacent to the gate is the Adlon Hotel, recently famous for Michael Jackson’s baby-dangling escapades. The hotel serves glamorous clientele and is partly owned by Queen Elizabeth II.

Alexanderplatz:
Layer upon layer of Berlin’s urban history is located in Alexanderplatz, interweaving centuries of social, political, and architectural history and repeatedly the subject of public debate and urban design competitions.

Berliner Dom :
The Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral), completed in 1905, is Berlin’s largest and most important Protestant church as well as the sepulchre of the Prussian Hohenzollern dynasty.

Brandenburger Tor:
The Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin’s most important monuments – a landmark and symbol all in one with over two hundred years of history.

Checkpoint Charlie:
Checkpoint Charlie, along with Glienicker Brücke (Glienicker Bridge) was the best known border-crossing of Cold War days.

Fernsehturm:
Everyone is supposed to remember that Berlin’s Fernsehturm (TV Tower) is 365m high and is the tallest building in Berlin.

Jüdisches Museum:
A timeless monument to Jewish history and life in Germany, Daniel Libeskind’s Berlin Juedisches Museum is one of the world’s undisputed museums and architectural gems.

Museumsinsel
Berlin’s Museumsinsel (Museum Island) is a unique ensemble of five museums, including the Pergamon Museum – built a the small island in Berlin’s Spree River between 1824 and 1930.
Rotes Rathaus

Berlin Rotes Rathaus, literally Red Town Hall, is the seat of the Berlin Senate – city government – as opposed to local, district government which is housed in the district Town Halls.

A popular spot is the art complex Tacheles, located on Oranienburger Strasse. It began as an anarchistic squat and now features bars, galleries, theatres, and a cinema within its walls. During the day it is free to enter and browse or purchase from the galleries of the many local artists who display here.

Cabin crew secrets to looking good on long-haul flights

Tags: , , , , , , ,

IT can seem a glamorous, enviable job: jet-setting around the world, hopping on and off planes at destinations as diverse and desirable as London, Bangkok and Berlin – all with time for a spot of sight-seeing.

But I’ve done enough flying to know that if you’re in long-haul for the long-haul the travel through multiple time-zones must take its toll.

On a recent trip to Europe I was left in a crumpled, exhausted state by the time the jet touched down in Heathrow.

I’d spent the entire time – as you do – in an economy seat, eating, sleeping and reading and ultimately shattered and disoriented.

So how come the flight attendants were all looking as fresh as they did when they greeted us as we boarded the flight back in Australia? Especially considering they’ve just put in a day’s work, or more. (A typical long-haul flight crew sleep for only three to four hours on a standard 12-13 hour flight with time usually allowed for grooming after they wake up). So I approached three major airlines – Qantas, Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines – to ask their flight attendants to share their secrets to staying sparkling in the air. Our peripatetic panel is: Kirsten Guard, a long-haul flight attendant from Qantas, Wayne Mitcham, flight service manager international airline, and flight attendants Suet Kwee and Elaine Man from Singapore Airlines.

BEFORE YOU DEPART
1. Ensure you have a good rest before the flight. Minimise your intake, or refrain from, caffeinated or carbonated drinks and drink plenty of water instead.

2. Dress in layers to keep comfortable. Aircraft temperatures vary so the more comfortable you are, the better you will feel.

3. Dress in comfortable, light, non-crease clothing and avoid wearing tight pants.

4. Wear flat, comfortable shoes – feet often swell when sitting in the one position for prolonged periods.

5. Pack a comfortable outfit for the long flight so you can change prior to landing or during transit. Remember you may be in the same clothes for over 24-hours on some long haul flights so changing your clothes will make you feel better at the other end.

ON BOARD
1. Crew are known to drink as much as two or three litres of water during a long haul flight. Drink still water regularly and don’t be afraid to drink too much of it. If you find you need to go to the bathroom more often, treat this as a good excuse to move your body during the flight – it will make you feel better in the end.

 IN THE AIR
1. Think about your arrival time and try to sleep throughout the flight accordingly. If you arrive at your destination in the morning, try to get a good sleep or rest on the aircraft. If you can’t sleep, even closing your eyes and resting your mind is better than nothing.

ARRIVAL
1. If you’re in transit try and shower and brush your teeth and change your clothing, if you haven’t already done so aboard the flight. Cleanse your face and reapply hydrating products. Keep drinking plenty of water.

2. Apply night-cream or hydrating moisturiser to the face and body regularly throughout a long flight to avoid dry skin. If you are wearing make-up, consider taking it off during the journey. Spritz your face regularly to keep it moist. Use lip balm to keep lips moist and avoid cracking.

3. Eat healthy snacks such as fruit and avoid saturated fats. Move, walk and stretch regularly throughout the flight. During the flight many crew members avoid heavy meals loaded with carbs and tend to opt for lighter options (such as salad and/or soup) during the night.

4. Use eye drops to prevent your eyes from drying. Consider using a saline nose spray to keep your sinuses moist.

5. Groom yourself prior to landing – brush your teeth and hair. Ladies, apply light make-up and lip-gloss to make yourself look and feel fresher upon arrival.

2. If you arrive in the evening have a few small naps to get you through the flight, avoiding a long sleep so that you can sleep that night at your destination.

3. The sooner you can adjust to the new the time zone the lesser the impact of jet lag you will experience. Revitalise yourself by taking deep breaths.

4. Dry lips are one of the hazards of the job – Elizabeth Arden’s eight-hour cream/gel is standard issue for many cabin crews.

5. Wear eye shades and ear plugs to assist in resting. Use a neck rest pillow to assist with comfort.

2. Expose yourself to sunlight to combat jet lag.

3. Walk or move around to get your blood flowing and to assist with staying awake and alert.

4. Avoid drinking too much alcohol when you arrive at your destination or you may fall asleep at the wrong time as well as risking dehydration.

5. A common saying among airline crews is: listen to your body – regardless of where you are what time it is. If you’re feeling like you need to have a sleep then sleep.

YOUR SAY: What are your favourite tips for staying fresh on a long-haul flight and beating jet-lag?

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

wild_party_girls

Everyone wants to party on the road but with a million hostels in the world, where should you go? I’ve searched high and low, drank with the best of them, and endured sleepless nights by the toilet to find the best party hostels out there.

Here are twenty that will keep you drinking, dancing, flirting, and hugging the porcelain goddess until the sun comes up:

Surf N’ Sun   :                 Surfers Paradise, Australia.surfers_paradise_pic

With a swimming pool and open courtyard, the Surf N’ Sun packs the young, the wild, and the alcoholic. Bar Crawls take place every night and the hostel offers punch and free club entry. Boxes of goon start flowing late afternoon when people come back from the beach.

The Clown and Bard   :      Prague, Czech Republicclown-and-bard

With a 36 person dorm room, this place is always hopping. There’s a bar downstairs with a two for three happy hour beginning a pillow lounge, the Flying Pig is the spot for those looking to channel their inner Bob Marley. There’s a constant cloud of smoke seeping out into streets at all hours of the day and night. Don’t worry if you run out- there are two coffeeshops across the street!

Base  :                                  Melbourne, Australiabase-backpackers-st-kilda

Base features a downstairs club that pumps out music every night. You won’t get any sleep as the music filters up the floors and entices you to come down and party until dawn. The young and the restless fill the dance floor after drinking pitchers of beer and cheap, colorful shots. There’s usually theme and karaoke nights that let you embarrass your self all night long.

Loki   :                                        Cusco,  Peruloki-peru

Located in a 450 year old building, Loki is known throughout South America for its parties. With regular events, an open lounge, and theme nights, I wouldn’t expect any sleep here either. The bar is regularly packed so tight, you’ll be practically grinding against your neighbor.

#11 Happy Guesthouse : Phnom Penh, Cambodia11-happy-guesthouse-cambodia

Why: Located by the lake in Phnom Penh, #11 Happy Guesthouse features a huge patio, two big screen TVs, a pool table, and one dollar beers. Always packed, this hostel is filled with the party seekers who spend their days sightseeing and night drinking beer before heading to the infamous Heart of Darkness.

St. Christopher’s Inn  :                London, Englandst-christophere28099s-inn-london

A bar, karaoke, cheap drinks, and a license to go until 4am all means that this hostel is bursting with partygoers and one the busiest in London. After you drink it down, you can take it off at the rooftop hot tub. People here know where the action is and if you play your cards right, it just might be your room.

Kabul   :                                     Barcelona, Spainkabul-spain

Located in the center of Las Ramblas, Kabul has a very open second floor where all parties happen. Happy hour officially begins at 7, which is usually a few hours after everyone wakes up. With a reputation for partying, this place keeps drawing those who start partying at 2 a.m. and sleep until 2 p.m. This place gives new meaning to the term “late night.” I was called a quitter for sleeping at 5 a.m.

The Rising Cock  :                      Lagos, Portugalrising-cock-portugal

The Rising Cock is infamous for its parties and it’s well deserved. Two things happen at the Rising Cock: drinking and drinking.

Start your day with the hostel’s booze cruise on which the majority of people get naked, and then keep the partying going with drinking games at the hostel. If you can’t handle 24 hour partying, this hostel is not for you.

The Pink Palace     :                         Corfu, Greecepink-palace-corfu-greece

The Pink Palace is one of the world’s most famous party hostels in the world and with good reason: toga parties, cheap shots of ouzo, happy hours, and theme nights. After a day at the beach (which is just minutes away) or their booze cruise, you’ll be spending the night dancing at their club, Palladium, until the sun comes up. The hostel has over 300 beds- there’s a good chance, you might not end up in yours!

The Treehouse    :                        Ko Chang, Thailandtreehouse-ko-chang

Every night is a bucket night at the Treehouse, and it’s the perfect blend of a relaxed hippy vibe and partying with a very active dance floor and a lot drinking. This place has all the ambiance you need and you don’t have to stay there to party there. People trickle in from all over to have fun, making this a hotspot on Lonely Beach.

The Yellow Location  :          Rome, Italyyellow-location-rome

With a bar downstairs and semi-nightly pub crawls, it’s pretty easy to meet people at the Yellow. It’s not a huge hostel either making the close quarters also convenient for meeting fellow travelers.

Ostello Archi Rossi   :        Florence, Italyostello-archi-rossi

This place has been popular for a long time as evident by the walls covered by the names of past guests. A big courtyard and common dining area keep people mingling and drinking vino rossi. There are some clubs down the street and, when they close, you can move back to the courtyard to keep the party going. The rooms are a little away from the action so you can actually get some sleep if you want.

Wombats    :                                    Berlin, Germanywombats-berlin

Known for its partying, Wombats rarely sees anyone over 25. With an ultra-chic bar, everyone breaks out their best attire and pickup skills here. Cheap drinks keep travelers mingling all night long. If you can’t meet anyone here, you can’t meet anyone anywhere.

The Jazz on South Beach  :   Miami, Florida USAjazz-on-south-beach-miami

Located right near the beach, The Jazz on South Beach has an excellent bar that hosts the bold and beautiful of South Beach. This is the place to stay if you’re looking to be seen in South Beach.

Carnival Court  :  Capetown, South Africacarnivalcourt-capetown

There’s no chance of a good night’s sleep at Carnival Court. Located near a lot of bars (there’s also a bar in the hostel), this place is a hangover waiting to happen.  It’s wild here and everyone is looking to break a new drinking record. The staff will point you in the direction of the parties but you just might have trouble walking there as the fun here starts well before the sun goes down.

Millhouse Hostel :                     Buenos Aires, Argentinamillhouse-hostel-buenos-aires

The music is on 24-hours a day at the Millhouse and the atmosphere is extremely social! Each night has a different activity such as dance party, karaoke night, and tango lessons. Definitely a hostel for those that want non-stop fun and excitement right at home! Most commonly heard line: “Were those moans from the porno shop next store or did you get lucky last night?”

Auckland Central Backpackers     Auckland, New Zealandauckland-central-backpackers

Located right down town, this hostel draws upon the fact its part of the Base chain. That means all the craziness of Melbourne spills over with people getting down and dirty all night long. It will give you another reason to keep staying longer in Auckland.

India House  :  New Orleans, Louisiana, USAindia-house-new-orleans

A funky converted house that was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, the India House features eccentric local characters and travelers who just can’t leave. Maybe it’s Bourbon St. Maybe it’s the jazz. Maybe it’s the beer vending machine in the kitchen. Whatever it is, people here know how to have a good time.

Tina’s Backpackers  :             Caye Caulker, Belizetinae28099s-backpackers-belize

Located right on the beach, Tina’s Backpackers keeps people in close quarters. Everyone here is into island living – sun by day, drink by night. Though the crowd tends to be a bit older (30ish), you wouldn’t know it by the way people party here. It is way off the beaten path but it’s worth it.
