Top Travel Blogs to Discover

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

These blogs give you the excellent writing, photography, travel tips and insight you would find in magazines, but don’t charge a dime for it online. If you are a travel lover and aren’t addicted to some of them yet, I apologize, because you are about to add to the things that take up hours of your normal week.

Fox Nomad by Anil Polat. Anil is one of the most knowledgable technology travelers out there today. Aside from being incredibly well traveled (he just spent a few weeks in northern Iraq), if you have any questions about how to cheaply use an unlocked cell phone on the road, or work around internet blocks in countries like China, or any other technology question you can think of, his website is the one for you.

  • Fevered Mutterings by Mike Sowden. Mike is a Brit. I mention this because if you don’t appreciate dry British humor, you may want to pass on reading his stuff. But if you like travel writing with a insightful and thoughtful slant — and also with a British sensibility — Mike is your guy.
  •

  • Johnny Vagabond by Wes Nations. Wes is going to read this, I am sure, so I want to make sure he and everyone else takes this as a compliment. I have followed him and read his stuff since before he started traveling on his current long journey. He’s a hell of a lot better now than he’s ever been before. His photography is truly great and improving with every post. And no one seems to get into more unusual and entertaining, situations than him. Go read his post on getting into a poker scam in Vietnam or check out his Ganges River photos and tell me you disagree — he is turning into an amazing talent.
  •

  • Canvas of Light by Daniel Nahabedian. Best travel photographer on the internet. There is no reason to beat around the bush. If you want to get carried away with the joy of an amazing photo — go check out Daniel’s stuff.
  •

  • The Aussie Nomad by Chris Richardson. Chris is a personal friend and one that I want to get traveling again! He’s stopped for a bit in London to do some work (though he is taking weekend trips all over Europe and writing about them). He gives some of the most straightforward and direct backpacking advice out there — worth reading, if only for his dollar by dollar breakdowns of what it costs to visit European cities on a backpacker’s budget.
  •

  • Bacon is Magic by Ayngelina Brogan. As the title of her blog might lead you to think, Ayngelina is a serious foodie. She’s traveling through Central and South America on an extended journey and although she writes about much more than food, it is those posts that I try to make sure I haven’t read if I am hungry.
  •

  • Wandering Trader by Marcello Arrambide. I just recently ‘found’ Marcello and although I love his website, I think I like his unique story even more. His life story and background is fascinating, but what I find really cool now is that he’s traveling around the world, while making money day trading in the U.S. stock market (ergo the website’s name). He just got back from Antarctica and his photos from there are great.
  •

  • Wandering Earl by Derek Earl Baron. Earl is my idol. He has been traveling constantly since 2000. Think about that for a minute. More than a decade on the road. Like Anil, he also just recently visited northern Iraq and you can get lost on his site for days at a time, reading about his various adventures.
  •

  • Two Backpackers by Jason and Aracely. I have a special admiration for couples that can successfully manage long-term travel. I am still looking for someone I can travel with for a couple weeks without getting aggravated, so couples that can travel together for months and years impress me mightily. Jason and Aracely are knocking around in South America right now and their stories and photos will inspire you.
  •

  • The Planet D by Dave and Deb. Another traveling couple that I admire, Dave and Deb had some of the best and most interesting answers of anyone yet on my Lucky 13 series. Their photos are National Geographic-quality and their writing isn’t far from it.
  •

  • Where is Jenny? by Jenny Leonard. Most of the bloggers mentioned are veterans of the travel blogging community. Jenny is more of a newbie, but she’s making a quick impression. She’s actually yet to take the road, but her preparation posts make it clear that she is going to cast a long shadow once she gets out there. Look for lots of adventure from this young, tech-savvy skateboarder and wordsmith.
  •

  • Beers and Beans by Beth and Randy. Beth and Randy are also travel photographers, but they intersperse great photos with some truly interesting written content. Their website is simply beautiful — clean, well organized and so full of material that will keep you entertained for longer than you intend.
  •

  • Freedonia Post by Joel Ward. Joel is funny. Really funny. Go to his site, click on the Brain Drops links and start there. He’s got an amazing eye for the oddities of the road. Once you have been enchanted by the Brain Drops, wander around and check out the rest.
  • Well, I’ll give you a bonus one also. Unbravegirl, otherwise known as Sally. Sally has a special place in my heart for two reasons: she is one of the few travel bloggers that is actually somehow less tech savvy than I am and, like me, her posts tend towards the long-winded. Normally a bad way to write for the short attention span of the internet, but I challenge you to go read a few of her posts and somehow not be enchanted enough to make it all the way through. Funny, snarky, thoughtful — she’s a great read and some smart book agent should snap her up now, because her form is perfect for that format.

So there you go. If you go and give these folks a chance, I bet you are going to agree with me that some of the finest travel writing out there today is not in magazines or books, but is right there for free on the internet. Pass the good word to your friends — the more people reading good writing, the better for good writing. Enjoy.

    Budget Tips For Group Trips

    Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

What does traveling have to do with the recent economic crisis? As long as you know how to get the best deals, you can make vacations something you can do often enough. It’s all about being smart and doing the right research so you can make the most of what you’re getting and stretching your budget down to the very last dime. Here are a few suggestions that could save you:

    For the Ride

    - If you can take the car instead of the plane, go for it. You can all chip in for gas. Plus, the road trip gives you the privacy that you need and enough time to plan and bond before reaching your destination.

    - Apply for frequent flyer miles. With enough trips under your belt, you could actually accumulate enough points that allow you to go to far-flung areas.

    - If you’re going on a cruise, check if they offer group rates and see if you can get bigger discounts when you have more people signing up for the trip.

    For the Hotel and Accommodation

    - No doubt, five-star hotels are way more expensive, but like anything, it becomes cheaper when you have two or more people staying in a room.

    - You don’t have to limit your choices with the ones in the area. If you have a car with you, you can actually get a room in a nearby town. If you want to head for the beach, you just have to give your group fifteen or thirty minutes leeway. That’s not really much when you see how much you can save.

    - Camp out instead. While the planning can be more of a hassle, the time you’ll spend outdoors can be just as rewarding.

    For Your Meals

    - Forget about those expensive restaurants. Ask a local where you can get the meals for a fraction of the usual cost.

    - Forget the usual fare of fast-food as well. Instead, make friends with those who live in the area. Who knows, they could actually invite you to feast in their homes instead and show you some local hospitality. This ought to be safe as well if you go in a big group.

    - You can also bring canned goods and easy-to-prepare meals with you. Some inns offer a mini-kitchenette where you can do the actual cooking. When you get things in bulk and do the preparation yourselves, you can spend the extra money you’ll save on other luxury items instead.

    For Souvenirs

    - Prepare a list of people you need to give to. Otherwise, postcards will do.

    - You can also just take your camera along and just put them all in an album that you can always access whenever you want to reminisce. Plus, you save yourself from all that extra junk because chances are, you really won’t get that souvenir that you’ve purchased.

Follow these tips and stretch your money. You’ll see that vacations are more special because of the memories you get, and not the amount you’ve purchased.

Backpacking – Killer Tips For When You Go Backpacking

    Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

    backpacking2

By having the correct backpacking gear you will be assured that it will be an enjoyable and pleasurable trip. It really can really make or break your adventure so follow these great tips to make sure you use the correct gear and have a fantastic time.

Buy gloves those are thick enough to protect and insulate from the cold and heat, but have good grip too.

When you turn in to sleep for the night make sure you wear a hat when sleeping in the cold. It is a highly effective way to get extra warmth as so much heat is lost through the head. You will be helping essential heat to not leave your body. Also, if you do feel yourself getting too warm then simply take it off – which is so much more convenient than taking off other layers of clothing or bedding.

Zip top bags are highly recommended as you can use them for both damp and wet items of clothing to isolate them away from your dry gear until you have a chance to dry them. It is a really good idea to carry your map in them too.

Bandanas are really useful too so include a couple in your kit. They can be used as a bandage, pot holder or even a water filter. They have many, many uses and are lightweight and take up virtually no room. You will not notice you are carrying them so if you don’t use them – it’s not a problem.

Take a newspaper on your trip – but not just for reading! These can be put inside your boots at night, when you settle down to camp. The newspaper will make your boots dry quicker by soaking up any moisture. If you don’t use them for your boots then they are also great as a firelighter.

Use individual colored bags to organize groups of items in your backpack. This will make these groups of items far easier to locate and will negate the need to empty your backpack in order to find something.

It is essential to carry some plastic bags – like the ones used for trash. These can be used for a multitude of things such as separating wet items of clothing from dry items, storing trash or covering over items form the rain.

Of course, don’t forget the essentials such as a Swiss army knife, map and compass!

Backpacking Adventure – Top Tips on How to Organize it Successfully

    Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

    backpackers adventure

You must not be unprepared when embarking on a backpacking expedition and as well as taking food, clothes and money etc… you will need many other items, so how do you keep track of everything we need for our trip? By keeping a checklist you will be organized so that you won’t forget anything thus minimizing the time it takes to get ready and be prepared as well as eliminating stress of getting everything together.

With a checklist you will be organized many weeks before your trip and as you don’t want to forget anything, this is a perfect solution in organizing and managing your trip. So, what kinds of things need to go on the checklist?

If you are going aboard then a passport must go on the list together with any visas. The visa allows you to get into the country you are visiting. Be aware of the costs way before you trip and make sure you allow enough time for the visa to arrive. Visa information should always be checked with your local government before you depart.

    backpackers items

Note down on your checklist with regards to possible vaccinations that could be needed for your trip. You may need medications too so make sure your prescription is dealt with in plenty of time in advance of your trip. You may have to provide proof that you have had the vaccination when visiting some countries. Seek medication advice from your own physician.

Add to your checklist about medical insurance. This really is essential traveling abroad as you may have no idea of the charges and possible complications that you may have to deal with in the event of an emergency or if you fall ill. Get travel insurance that will cover you in the event of a trip cancellation as this will save a lot of worrying and heartache as well preventing losing a lot of cash.

Think of the additional things are you wouldn’t normally spring to mind and note them on your checklist in the weeks, or even months before your trip – you will be glad that you did.

European Backpacking is a Great Holiday Idea

    Tags: , , , , , , ,

If you are looking for a great holiday idea, it is highly recommended that you backpack in Europe. It is a very unique experience that everyone should have at least once. Odds are, if you do it once you will probably want to do it again.

    backpackers mallorca- spain

When you are deciding when is the best time of year to backpack in Europe, there are many things you need to take into consideration. The summer is definitely the time of year when most people go backpacking. This is convenient because it makes it easier for you to gather up a group of people that want to go hiking with you. The downside to going backpacking in and around Europe in the summer is that the prices are higher at this time of the year. If you are going to go in the summer, it is important to make reservations ahead of time. Since this is the busiest time of the year, it is often booked months ahead.

If you decide to go in the summer, it does not matter which summer month you choose, as they all will be generally priced the same. As for the winter, there are some obvious downsides to it. The weather is not as nice, and it is harder to find people to go backpacking with you! If you are on a budget, though, going backpacking in Europe in the winter is a great alternative.

When you go on your trip, it is a good idea to get backpacker holiday insurance. This protects you and your gear in case of an accident. If a medical situation arises, the insurance will cover you. Also, if something is lost or stolen that is necessary for the trip, you will be glad that you purchased the backpacker insurance.

When packing for the trip, it is important to take as little as you can with you. You may be worried about packing every little thing that you need for your trip, but that will make your pack heavier (a lightweight backpack can counter this). If you are staying at a hostel, they offer free or cheap laundry services, which makes the pack much smaller. It is good to take about 4 to 5 days worth of clothes with you. It is important to remember that if something happens to your stuff while on the trip, there will be an opportunity to replace it at a decent price.

Now that you have planned your backpacking trip, all you need to do is select a destination. Your starting point is really not that important since you will be backpacking all over Europe. You will find that there are cheaper rates when flying to a big city, such as London. Before you go off on your trip is important to make some kind of an itinerary. Included in this, you want to have all of the must-see places listed. When making your itinerary, be sure to give yourself some freedom and extra time, that way if something arises that you want to check out, you will have plenty of time to do so.

    Backpacking Safety Tips

    Tags: , , , , , , ,

     travel_header2

    backpackers1

The most important thing to think about when going on a backpacking adventure is to be prepared for anything. As the saying goes, if it can happen it will happen. These tips will help you avoid any misadventures and enjoy your backpacking trip to the fullest.

    Keep Hydrated

It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to keep yourself hydrated no matter what type of a backpacking trip you are on. The best way to do this of course is through the drinking of large amounts of water. You of course do not want to drink it all at once, but spread it out over the course of the day. Making sure that there is plenty of purified drinking water that is available for you and your entire group will lead to many happy campers.

It is important to note, that it does not matter what type of weather or what the temperatures that you are in when going on the trip, you will need to be hydrated. It may not be as obvious that you are losing fluids while on your trip in colder weather, but it is occurring nonetheless.

    Dress for the Occasion

One of the most important pieces of clothing to a backpacker is their sleeping bag. This is the item that most do not think of as clothing, but in essence it is the clothes that you sleep in. Make sure that it has the proper ratings for the weather you will be encountering while on your trip.

Make sure to dress in layers as well so as to be able to put clothes on and off to adjust body temperature as necessary. Use your clothes as a thermostat regulator to prevent overheating and overexposure on the trip. Sun poisoning, heatstroke and hypothermia are all things to avoid.

Of course, you are going to want to take care of your feet as well while on your expedition. Make sure to wear hiking shoes or boots that will give you the necessary support so as to avoid twisted and sprained ankles. Do not forget to wear proper socks and sock liners so to prevent blisters and rubbing of the feet.

    First Aid

Having an adequate first aid kit is one of the most essential pieces of equipment that you will need to carry on your trip. Make sure to of course have the bare essentials in the kit such as an ace bandage, band aids, burn cream and all other minimum items. Also, keep items to aid in rehydration if someone is dehydrated, such as a powdered electrolyte drink mix.

Make sure to keep things handy and to be ready for any type of danger encountered such as a snakebite kit, or emergency ice packs.

    Food Safety

When you are going on a trip, food is always a good thing. Keeping it away from animals as well as safe for you are the two most important things to look at when going on a trip. Perishable items are never a good idea on any backpacking trip. This is because of the inability to keep them at the optimum temperature to preserve food quality.

When preparing food on a trip be sure to follow instructions and to use proper sanitation in order to limit the possibility of illness from poor preparation or cleanliness. The last thing that anyone wants is to be sick because someone did not clean the dishes properly. Wash, rinse and sanitize to ensure the safest practices. This goes for dishes and people as well.

Know the best food storage practices of the camp or area you are in. It could be hanging your food in a tree to avoid bears, or using provided lock boxes. Either way, you want o keep yourself and the animals safe by not allowing the food to fall into the wrong hands.

    Know the Trek

Make yourself familiar with where you are going. Know what type of terrain you will encounter as well as the environment you will be in. These factors will go a long way in clothing, food and time decisions for your trip. These will also put you in better shape when it comes to being safe for your trip.
