Greek Prison Helicopter Escape

korydallos-prison22209

I had been in Athens for three days in February competing in the Karate championships. I was declared the winner in the light heavy weight class. My last day was spent seeing all the major sights,  The Acropolis, Temple of Zeus, Plaka, Omonia Square, Keramikos, Monastiraki, and the Panathenaiko Stadium. So my last hours in Athens I go  this bar in central for one drink before I get a Cab to the Airport,  I motioned the barmen I would like a beer, He puts the bottle on the bar and I have one drink when suddenly…this gang of young men bearing some radical anarchist posters come storming in led by some guy angrily shouting something towards me in Greek.  I have no Idea what he’s going on about and just try and smile. He comes right up to me does the Stare real close to my face. I feel he’s bulling me and The barman has this real  worried look, I just move move back a little getting in position and ready  to fight this loud mouth Bully.  Ohi, Ohi, Ohi, the barman yells frantically but it was to late, I was in action and doing well ! I’d knocked their leader out cold with a high sweeping kick to his head and had three of them in the corner belting out some punishment ,  I chased the rest of them out into the street when I heard the Police sirens coming.  They blocked the Street and I walked up to Police trying to explain I was the innocent tourist that was bullied by the local thugs, I was immediately cuffed and put in the Wagon.  Locked up in the local Police cells for the night they drove me out to Korydallos Prison the next day.

Out in the exercise yard the next day in a foreign prison I could feel the tension rising amongst the inmates.

The head guy sent his best hitter over towards me, as he threw a punch towards me I smashed his fist and broke his hand. I motioned for any other challengers to come towards me but they all retreated. Later that afternoon in the Gym Vassilis and his sidekick Alket told me this head guy wouldn’t let up untill I was bashed or killed as I had destroyed his enforcers hand. They offered me an escape plan. No thanks pal, I can take care of myself I stated. I reckoned I’d be out within the week anyway.  This Vassilis guy had some crazy plan to lower a Helicopter near the Prison roof and fly out.  These guys were telling me they had a Court case on the Monday for escaping in a Helicopter from the same Prison 3 years earlier, I couldn’t believe their brazen attitude !

The next afternoon as I put down the 700 lb Bar in the exercise yard I heard the Helicopter come over the Prison and hover near the roof with some Woman lowing a Rope ladder while firing an automatic rifle at the Guards.  I see Vassilis and Alket clamber up the rope and Fly away. Wow, these guys did it again !

To perpetrate an escape by Helicopter to avoid the court case charges for escaping by Helicopter ! I was out by the next day thanks to my Consulate. It is now July and those guys are still Free !

Steps of the Greek Masters

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I arrived Greece at the new Athens Airport built for the 2004 Olympics. Strait to Uncle and Auntie Christou s place in Glyfada, a coastal suburb. A delicious lunch and of I headed with Uncle Christou. Onto the senic Tram line to Panathinaiko Stadium, site of the first modern Olympics in 1896. Temple of Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch were great but my Highlight of course was to walk to the top of the Acropolis to the magnificent Parthenon.

Athens spreads out below the Acropolis, which glows under lights by night for a great view, I walk same stone pathway once traversed by the ancient Athenians as part of an annual rite, known as the Panathenaic procession, to the site of the grandest of temples of around 500 B.C. We climbed up past the ruins of the formal entrance, the Propylaia, and stood before the remains of the Parthenon, where a huge statue of the goddess Athena once stood. I was amazed at how much of the edifice is still intact, restoration is ongoing. Close by is the Erechtheion,  massive statues of women used as supporting pillars. Below the walls is Theatre of Herod Atticus, built in  A.D. 160. On to the Agora. The Stoa of Attalos, has a fine museum. Of original columns only 15 remain, their size shows that the Zeus temple was once larger than the Parthenon, and the largest in Greece.

To walk in the footsteps of Plato, Socrates, Aristotle through the old political center of Athens, Was a highlight for me and very inspirational. Made me feel so privileged to share their heritage !

Why are the Greeks so Happy !?

I believe I know ; the constant Family celebrations for all manner of events. The spread of delicious Mediterranean cuisine, Name day celebrations, Everyone knows which friend / relative is celebrating, no need for Invitations or email,  All Greeks know where to go for a good time ! All the Life styles & systems they began : Physical Culture, Politics, Philosophy, Art, Mathematics, Democracy.

Two Famous Greek credos :  Know Thyself . Nothing in Excess.  I Live this everyday !
