Everyone’s had one next to them. The plight was beautifully illustrated in the film Planes, Trains and Automobiles when the mild-mannered Steve Martin finds himself stuck on a flight next to a talkative shower-ring salesman played by John Candy.

Of course, there a plenty of friendships and relationships that have taken off on planes but there are those moments when you just want to read, sleep or check out the flight attendants. It pays to be polite, as you would in any other life situation, since you’re going to be spending a lot of time next to your fellow passenger.

Under most circumstances, I’d rather put up with an annoying person next to me than be rude as it will cast a pall over the flight if you cause offence.

The most common piece of advice in handling Parisians is to try and learn some of the local lingo and pleasantries. For the French, people who remain fiercely proud of their language, it’s a mark of respect.

And in a country that celebrates style it pays to dress up in Paris, if only to blend in and not immediately identify yourself as a tourist. Look and act like a tourist and you’ll be treated like one in Paris.

Credit when credit isn’t due

I was recently in Barcelona, waiting in a hotel lobby early one morning for a taxi, as an American couple discovered that the payment for their accommodation had been refused by their credit-card provider back in the US.

As the taxi was taking a long time to arrive I was witness to the agony of the couple using the phone at reception to speak to the credit-card provider back home in the US. Their conversation seemed to go on interminably until they discovered that they had given the bank the wrong dates for their travels.

The lesson: check whether it’s necessary to alert your credit-card company or bank of the dates of your travels, as is increasingly the case these days.

Make sure you factor in time differences into those dates, as the couple appeared not to have done.  And travel with more than one card. It was a lesson I learnt myself a week or so later in Lisbon when I received an SMS from my bank stating that one of my cards had been suspended.

The bank had noticed spending in a faraway land (in reality, a mini-shopping spree by yours truly) and was worried about fraud. Fortunately I was able to contact them and explain I was in Portugal and the suspension on the card was lifted.

The tipping point

Even after a lifetime of travel I still find tipping a challenge. Coming from a country where a tip is a discretionary “gift” by the customer in reward for good service it’s a shock to experience countries like the US where not leaving a gratuity is considered akin to theft.

A well-travelled colleague of mine once told me he was at a restaurant in the US and, having not left a tip because he cared neither for the service or the food, was literally pursued down the street by an outraged waiter demanding his gratuity.

My view is the “when in Rome” principle, especially when workers such as taxi drivers and waiting staff rely on tips to earn a decent wage. As much as you may resent them it’s best to submit to the local customs, lest you cause offence, outrage or worse.

After graduating University with a degree in Business, like every other fresh faced, ambitious young professional I joined the ‘rat race of life’.

After 2 years of stress, meeting ‘sales targets’, being abused by disgruntled clients, getting up at stupid times in the dull British weather, I had decided this was enough and there must be more to life somewhere out there in the World.

Without much planning, money or resources I handed in my resignation and bought a one way ticket to Thailand and a few days later I was lying on the white pristine sands of Lamai beach Koh Samui (an island off the East coast of Thailand).

It did not take me long to get addicted to this easy relaxed way of life and subsequently over the last four years I have lived in some of the most beautiful places on Earth. Some countries I have lived in include Cambodia, Thailand, India, Australia, New Zealand, Sierra Leone, Malaysia and Singapore.

I have trekked the jungles of India, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia and Sierra Leone, have had countless encounters with animals and wildlife you would never imagine seeing. The world is literally your oyster and you can do what ever you want from, trekking in luscious wildlife enriched jungles to lying on desolate beaches, living with local tribes high up in the mountains, and when you feel like it you can live a cosmopolitan life in the city.

The purpose of this article is to let you know that there is a big wide world out there ready for you to see and experience.
