Most people are born with an interest in travel that never subsides. The fact that blogs like Chris Guillebeau’s, Gary Arndt’s, or this one (on a much much smaller scale) are as popular as they are is proof of this fact.

The problem is that most of us, and I fell into this trap too, put it off. Either for 1-2 weeks at a time on a yearly vacation or “until some day when X happens.” Whatever eXcuse (get it?) you have for continuing on living a life you’re not thrilled with, it’s unfounded. There is always a way. (I just set myself up for a slew of “but, but, but my situation is different” comments/e-mails.)

Even when it’s dangerous, it’s not as dangerous as some people would have you believe. I’ve felt more fear walking the streets of Detroit with $10 in my pocket than walking around Mumbai or Bangkok at night with thousands of dollars in gear and cash on my person.
You will stumble onto awesome events like Holi and Songkran. Who doesn’t love a week-long water fight?

You will meet, and make friends with, people who you would never have met staying where you are. Most of us only associate with people in our immediate geographical areas. I call it Friendship By Geography, and it’s incredibly sad.

I know the way I say it is probably horrible, but the old lady who runs the best veg restaurant in Chiang Mai (Save Thunya on Nantaram Rd just outside Chiang Mai Gate) always treats me like a king when I come in. I know she appreciates my limited Thai because she speaks approximately 3 words of English so we’re in the same boat. I wonder if I can use the Thai greeting everywhere I go? 10 Facts About The State Of Israel

Israel is a unique country in many ways. The amazing beauty, ancient history and rich culture go back thousands of years. With its long summer and short winters, Israel is a key tourist spot. Here are ten interesting facts about the country.

1. Location – Israel is located in southwestern Asia on the eastern side of the Mediterranean Sea. Israel has been revered as their homeland, the Promised Land, as God gave to Abraham. Egypt and the Gaza Strip are on the southwest bank, Lebanon is on the north border, Jordan and the West Bank are on the east borders, and Syria is in the northeast.

2. Ancient History – This land was inhabited by the Canaanites and other Semitic people nearly three thousand years ago. The Israelites, also called Hebrews and children of Israel, moved to this area between 1800 and 1500 BC. Saul was their king, followed by King David, and then David’s son, Solomon. The kingdom was divided into two countries shortly after Solomon’s reign, Israel and Judah. Israel has been a country of many wars and has been overruled by the Greeks, Assyrians, Persians and Romans. Until the 20th century, the Romans remained in power.

3. Modern History – Jewish people always consider Israel their homeland. A movement began in the 1880′s by the Zionists with the intent to regain Israel as the Jewish homeland. Jews began to settle in Israel’s desert zones, which was governed by the Turkish and then the British governments. In 1948, the British rule ended and the inhabitants declared independence for the new Jewish state. Immediately after this declaration of independence, all neighboring countries attacked Israel. The year-long war lasted until negotiations were made.

4. National Government – Israel is a parliament democracy where all citizens who are 18 years and older can vote. Their parliament is called the Knesset, which is comprised of 120 members. The members can serve for a maximum of four years. The Knesset makes the laws, approves taxes and budgets and taxes and decides policies on a national level. Voting is done by party preference, rather than for individual candidates. There s no limit to the number of candidates. The state of Israel has no written constitution, but uses the “Basic Laws” written by the Knesset. The leader of Israel’s government is the prime minister. The Prime Minister will then appoint ministers to the cabinet which must then be approved by the Knesset. The head of state is the President of Israel. He serves for a maximum of seven years and many of his duties are ceremonial in nature.

5. Politics – Due to the large number of opinions in Israel, there have been many political parties. Twelve party seats won in the Knesset in 2009. Three main political parties are in the country, which divide into other parties – the Zionists, which includes the more conservative people, the social democratic party and the religious Zionists. There are some smaller political groups such as special-interest parties, Orthodox Jewish parties and Israeli-Arab parties.

6. Tourism – Tourism is one of the most important sources of income for Israel. Tourists come from all over the world to visit Israel because of the many historical, archaeological and religious sites there. The museums, beaches, nature reserves and resorts in Israel are known world-wide and draw people from all cultures. Many of Israel’s service industries, such as restaurants and hotels are supported by the tourists. In 2009, there were over 2.7 million foreign tourists in Israel.

7. Manufacturing and Agriculture – There are factories in Israel that produce a wide range of goods such as processed foods, plastics, chemical products, electronic equipment, fertilizer, scientific instruments, textiles and clothing. Diamond cutting is a big industry also. Israel’s work force is largely comprised of people who used to be farmers. Much of Israel’s farming industry has been taken over by machinery.

8. Religion – There is a wide range of religious affiliation in Israel. Of those over twenty years of age, 55% say that they are traditional Jews, while 20% consider themselves secular Jews. There are about 16% of the population that are Muslims, 2% are Christians and 1.5% are Druze.

9. Education – Children between the ages of three and eighteen are required to attend school. There are five types of schooling – state secular, state religious, ultra orthodox, communal settlement schools and Arab schools. Attended by both Jewish and non-Arab students,.

10. Culture – A broad range of Jewish beliefs and customs are in Israel. Jews have come back to Israel from all over the world and brought their various religious and cultural traditions with them. Israel is the only country that revolves around the Hebrew calendar.

5 Tips for First Time Cruisers

If you are a first time cruiser you are bound to have questions. We all did. Here are some tips to help you make some important decisions for you first cruise.

Cruise lines: how do you choose? The best way to do that is based on who is going. For a family I recommend Royal Caribbean, hands down they are the cruise line that will have something for all ages. Are you traveling in a group? Where does everyone want to go? Itinerary is probably most important. Do some research and decide where you want to go based on what time of year you are planning to travel. If you are going as couple you should probably choose based on your age and what the cruise line has to offer as far as activities. Do you want a nice spa with a thermal suite? Do you want a cruise that has cooking or wine classes? Do you like to go dancing at night? These are all things to research for you trip. Staterooms: how do you choose a stateroom? Now I know everyone says they are not going to spend a lot of time in their room so who cares what kind they get? I care! I am sorry but for me I am not going to enjoy cruising in a closet. No windows, no balcony, really? I don’t think so. You are on the ocean and you want to see it. And you don’t want to see it necessarily squished up against strangers. If you are going to cruise you should feel, hear and smell the ocean breeze. It is part of the experience. For me nothing less than a balcony will do. If you are traveling with kids, spring for the closet across the way to put them in. It will do wonders for your relationship. Trust me.

Shore Excursions: do you or don’t you go on them while you are on your cruise. Well here is the thing, shore excursions over all are a great adventure. I am not saying they always end up perfect or go the way you plan but more than likely either way you will have some stories to tell when you get home. Honestly for every cruise I have been on when I have done shore excursions, that cruise was better. Walking around the town and shopping is okay but a shore excursion will make you feel like you are part of the culture. You are learning something you wouldn’t if you just walked around and shopped. I am not saying do one in every port. Just most ports. Take a break and walk around the town of the port that has the best shopping. Do some research. See what everyone else liked doing there. Take an excursion. Have an adventure.

Dining: Lots of people want to know early, late or my time dining? Which is best? Well in all honesty it is different for every cruise and for every person. Early is great if you don’t have a lot of late port stops or you plan to get back on the ship by 3 or 4. Also if you want to catch the early show and do some of the other night life such as dancing or the piano bar, start early. Late is good if you are going to be in port late and are going to be just going to the show and going to bed because you are going to be up early to go into port. Now the difference between my time and traditional is a little bit of a different question. If you like meeting new people at dinner and dining with them for the rest of your cruise. Traditional is the way to go. The thing with My Time Dining is you may have to wait. If you aren’t traveling with a large group and you just want to eat when you want for the whole cruise My time dining is the way to go. If you are with a group but you want a different time than the traditional dining My Time is a great option. Make a reservation for your group first thing in the morning so you don’t have a long wait.

I am going to give you a bit of a trick to My Time Dining with a group. You don’t have to make a reservation everyday. The first full day on your cruise call to make your reservation for My Time Dining when they open in the morning. When you go to dinner that night if you like your table, your wait staff and the time you are eating go to the Maitre ‘d before you leave and tell him how much you loved it and ask if you can keep that table and time for the rest of the cruise. He will do it for you and you don’t have to think about it again. If you didn’t care for it, do it again the next night and if it is better keep it!

My last biggest tip for first time cruisers is this, use a travel agent! You knew that was coming, right? I know I have a biased opinion because I am one but here is the thing, we are an underused resource. Travel Agent services are free. We travel, a lot. We have knowledge of the itinerary, cruise lines, ships, shore excursions and ports. I do hours of research for my clients to make sure they get the vacation of their dreams. I want you to come back happy, relaxed and wanting to take another vacation! All the questions you have can be answered with a phone call. You can tell your travel agent where you want to go and then go back to what your were doing.

The last tip: Enjoy your cruise!

There are many factors that make the place we live the place we love to call home. Environment, weather, history, politics, economy, infrastructure, social climate, and entertainment all play a part. When choosing a place to live, your decision should be based on what issues are important to you. Finding the right combination of features is the key to loving where you live.

Healthcare and Tolerance – Amsterdam, The Netherlands

In 2009 the Netherlands was named as having the best healthcare system in Europe by the Euro Health Consumer Index. Six criterion examined were patient rights and information, e-health, waiting times for treatment, outcomes, range and reach of services provided and pharmaceuticals. The Netherlands is additionally praised for its minimal bureaucracy and patient empowerment.

The Netherlands, particularly Amsterdam, has become infamous for its tolerance of the taboo. The Dutch believe that people should make moral decisions with little interference from government. Marijuana is legal. Tattoo parlors, sex shops, and the red light district draw tourists. Hostels are packed during the peak summer season.

As far as culture, there are famous museums where you can see work by Van Gogh, Vermeer, and Rembrandt. One can learn the story of Anne Frank, relax in beautiful parks and ride a bike almost anywhere. In the mood for love? Although the cost of living is still high in New York, it has become slightly more affordable due to the recent economic downturn. In fact with many singles now unemployed, unmarried folks are taking advantage of their severance packages and enjoying all the city has to offer. With 35,000 restaurants, 3,800 bars, and 734 museums there is definitely plenty to do in New York City. The popular dating site, Match.com, has more active accounts in the NYC area than any other locale. Living in New York does, however require a high tolerance for crowds of people.

“The City That Never Sleeps” comes by its title easily. From piano bars to jazz lounges (and a few dozen dives of course), New York’s nightlife keeps the city hopping until early morning hours. Nightclubs like the Marquee feature world famous DJs for the partiers who love to dance. Mild Climate & English Speaking – Malta

Maltese islands

The island nation just 60 miles from Sicily, Republic of Malta, is a repeated winner of Quality of Life Index awards for best climate. With a daily average of over five hours of sunshine, mild winters, and hot summers – Malta is considered ideal by many. Diving, sailing, and colorful festivals abound. Golf and horseback riding are popular pastimes.

There are few sandy beaches and yes – sometimes it does rain on the Maltese islands. If it’s raining you can head indoors for opera, theater, music, and ballet at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta. The Manoel is the second-oldest theater in Europe.

The government is politically stable in Malta. Cost of living is low. Crime is minimal. Locals are hospitable. Travel is not difficult, despite island status.

The state of Virginia has beautiful shorelines and beaches. Virginia is very family and community oriented, with plenty of fairs, festivals, and community events. The people are diverse and friendly. Many of the schools are highly-ranked and offer plenty of extracurricular activities and elective courses to choose from.

Virginia takes the health and safety of its children very seriously. According to the official Virginia government website, $515,405 was awarded to 17 projects that support youth substance abuse and violence prevention programs for 2010.

Low Cost of Living & Retirement – Brazil

Brazil is the largest country in South America and therefore offers a broad range of opportunities for travel and diversity. From the Amazon jungles, to famous beaches, you will find the inhabitants friendly and hospitable. Although the nightlife is well known in Brazil, few are aware that Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are among the cheapest cities to live in (according to the Economist Intelligence Unit).

Want to pay off debt? Brazil is a good place to retire. Retirement visas are available with proof of income. It is common and legal for permanent residents to apply for Brazilian passports and keep their current citizenships and passports. Brazilian health care is very good. You do not need to be a citizen to use the national health care system. Patients pay nothing out of pocket for most care. For the highest quality health care private market providers are also available – for a fee. Even so, the fees are much less than purchasing independent health insurance in the U.S. In general, you get more for your money in Brazil.

Due to the well-developed agricultural, mining, manufacturing, and service industries, the economy of Brazil outweighs other countries in South America, and is quickly expanding its presence in international markets.

Simply Beautiful – Belize

Belize – Central America

Belize, considered one of the most beautiful countries in Central America, has it all. Belize touts great beaches, subtropical climate, diverse wildlife, and a low cost of living. The scuba diving and snorkeling is fabulous. The gorgeous waterfalls underneath the Maya Mountains are rivaled only by the hundreds of colorful species of birds flying the skies. Rent of a large house in Cayo district is only $300/month. Food at the local markets is very reasonably priced. The official language is English. The Retired Person’s Incentive Program starts at the ripe young age of 45 and allows tax free living.

Consider a snowbird lifestyle when it comes to living in Belize. The wet season is May to October. It rains all the time and there is a chance for hurricanes. But I’d stay November through April in this beautiful land, which is just where I’d like to be rather than the cold snowy land I call home that time of year.

Stunning Scenery – Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town features some of the most beautiful beaches and fascinating attractions in all of Africa. Families enjoy swimming in the warm waters along the False Bay coast, where whale watching is also popular. Kids swarm to Boulders Beach to see the penguins, and for a small fee, even swim with them. The hallmark of Cape Town is Table Mountain, a gigantic slab of sandstone with breathtaking views, trails for hiking, and paragliding for the adventurous. (Cable cars are available for the not-so-adventurous.)

The second most populated city in South Africa; Cape Town is known for being socially tolerant and culturally diverse. This coastal city is mild and rainy during the winter months, but dry and very warm the rest of the year. The bistros and restaurants offer a variety of world class cuisine to satisfy every palate, and are famous for their delicious wines. Clubs, lounges, and other entertainment venues make Cape Town ideal for the musically inclined. Thanks to the 2010 World Cup, business is booming in Cape Town. The real estate market is also on the upswing as more people relocate to this beautiful coastal city.

When you Travel, you will need these

Swiss Army Knife
(or imitation, of course) Seriously. Uncorking a wine bottle, adding an extra hole in your belt, getting a splinter out of your finger, this is the tool of choice. Mock if you like, but mine’s been useful more times than I can count, and so it tops the list. (If you’re flying, make sure to put it in your checked luggage, or you risk losing it to airport security!)
Earplugs : You never know. Snoring people in your dorm room, trains rattling by at 3 am, the folks next door having loud sex – ignore it all comfortably.

Eye cover : If you’re not light-sensitive, ignore this one. I wake up as soon as it’s light, so I always bring an eye mask for too-light curtains or neon lights next door.
Small bottles for everything Refill your shampoo and stuff into small bottles. Saves space.
Handwash Detergent If I’m going anywhere for a longer period, having a way to wash small things without recourse to a laundromat is fabulous. In a small bottle of course.

Travel Clothesline If you’re washing more than the bare minimum at a time, you’ll run out of places to hang clothes. An elastic travel clothesline like the one here or here can be invaluable.
Twist-ties, safety pins, and/or string You never know when you’ll need them, but there’s always sometime. Closing the bag of sugar, keeping that rip in your pants secure, or tying the tattered ends of your zipper so your bag can still close. MacGyver would never leave his house without twist-ties. None of these things take up much room, making their space-to-usefulness ratio excellent.

Ziploc Bags For the wet towel, for any non-dry substance, for food storage – always incredibly handy.
Medications and other healthcare info Seems obvious, but don’t forget whatever medications you might be on – especially the ones you don’t use all the time but really need sometimes… like the vacation where I forgot my asthma inhaler. If you have it, information about blood type, vaccinations, etc. can be very useful – you’ll be better off if you don’t need it, but if you do need it you will hate not having it.
Moleskin Unless you have supershoes and you are a superwalker, you will likely get blisters. And if you must have blisters, you must also have moleskin.
Q-Tips Use ‘em to clean your ears, or to clean out just about anything.

Note Book For everything: For keeping a journal, for taking down the address of the woman whose picture you just took so you can send her the picture later, for writing down tips from other travelers, or just recording your impressions. Also, I recommend using waterproof pens…

Baby Powder Those buses sure get smelling rank when everyone’s deodorant is stretched to the limit…if they’re wearing any. Help your laundry and your seatmate out, use baby powder on your smelly spots. Really helps absorb sweat, too. You smell nicer, and need to wash your clothes less often. Everyone wins!
Feminine Hygiene Products As many readers have pointed out, these are often harder to find than they should be (especially with language barriers), so it’s a good idea to bring at least a month’s supply. Even if you don’t need them, someone else will, and having them will get you lots of good travel karma.
Sex Stuff Might need condoms? Bring ‘em. No doubt there will be some available there, but why waste the time figuring out where and how? And if you want anything less mainstream than condoms – dental dams, lube, nipple clamps, whatever – you’re best off bringing it along. (And putting it in checked luggage, probably.)
Sewing Kit Sure, it’ll fix whatever rips you put in the clothes. But when sterilized with alcohol swabs or fire, those needles’ll also help pop your blisters. And it takes up just about no space at all. And you never know when string will be handy.

Tissue/T.P. Not just for runny noses, but for when your bus stops in a place that has no toilet paper.

Wet Wipes, Hand Sanitizer Antibacterial wet wipes are something I always bring – the advantage of wipes over gel is that you can also clean off your camera, the local pay phone, or whatever else if need be. But if you’re going to be on a plane and make sure you don’t get everyone else’s cold, bring something to wipe your hands with. (Yes, yes, I know Americans are paranoid about germs, but this really does help!)
Hostel specifics Ah, shared showers, dorm rooms, bunk beds…
Towel

Any towel will do, but a quick-drying travel towel can save you from having to pack a wet towel – great if you’re on the move a lot, and saves space too.
Shower shoes Personally I’d say it’s must if you’re sharing showers. Besides, slip-ons are generally good, for those late-night walks to the bathroom and such.
Earplugs & eye cover If you’re sleeping in a dorm, take precautions.
Sheets/sleeping bag Not as essential now that most places rent sheets. Yours will probably be cleaner than theirs, though.
Salt & pepper If you’re self-catering, boy, it sucks when you can’t get salt. Bring it or put it first on your shopping list once you’re there. And if you plan to do any more serious cooking, bring small bags or baby food jars of other spices – saves money, and is an easy way to jazz up your usual boring self-catering fare.
Practical things
in all weathers …but not all places have all weathers, so pick and choose!

Raincoat, poncho, or umbrella Because if you pack it, you’ll get good weather! (And you can often get super-small rain ponchos for cheap.) If you plan to hike, get a poncho that can cover your backpack too; that saved my butt on the Inca Trail.
Long underwear Goofy, but small, handy to pack, and keeps you deep down warm.
Windbreaker, waterproof jacket Not a bad thing to have as a raincoat substitute if you won’t face serious downpour.
Bathing suit You never know when you’ll need one. I needed one in winter in New Zealand.
Sturdy boots Waterproof, in case you go tromping through mud or snow or puddles.
Sunblock, Sunglasses, Sun Hat If you burn like I do, do not forget sun block; sun hat and sunglasses are also pretty important if you’re going to be outside somewhere other than England.
One nice outfit You never know what kind of random invitation you might get, but if you pack something that can moonlight as casual yet vaguely elegant, you’ll be well prepared. For women, you may just need nice accessories and some lip gloss.
Optional, depending What’s important to you? Who are you on your trip?
Photos People you meet want to see your family, friends, house, pets, who- and whatever you care about. Bring them – especially if your language skills are rusty, they help.
Camera If it’s digital, bring a way to download pictures or extra disks so you can take more pictures if you need to.

Cables, Cords, Etc. Don’t forget any cables you need to connect or power cameras, computers, or cell phones.
Playing Cards A reader pointed out I’d left this off the list, and it’s a serious omission. That 14-hour train ride would’ve gone a lot more slowly without playing cards, and they can be a great way to work around a language barrier.
Address List I bring a list of everyone I’m going to send a postcard to, complete with their addresses. I also bring along addresses of anyone I’m meeting on my trip. One reader suggested bringing them along as pre-printed labels, which seems very handy.
Extra film Be careful about how much this goes through x-ray machines; their effects are cumulative, so if you put undeveloped 400-speed film through four x-ray checks, you may see some damage. Might be worth either buying film there or developing your film at your destination.
Cheap (but not bad) perfume Sort of like the above Baby Powder tip, this one is to minimize your clothes washing. Hang the bar-smoke-covered jeans in your bathroom. Spritz ‘em with perfume and let them hang an evening. And then? Voila. Quite a good stopgap solution. I like Gap’s “Om” flavor myself.
Gifts and Thank-You Cards I usually take along one or two gifts that are not specifically geared toward any one person, assuming I will run into someone who will be so nice that I’ll want to give them this gift – a book, or something produced where I live. Another reader suggested thank-you cards as a good way to show your appreciation. Obviously, when I know in advance I’ll be staying with someone or otherwise dependent on their kindness, I also try to bring a specific gift for that person.

Salonpas Love these. They’re little Japanese anti-ache patches, but I’ve discovered another use for them. Caught in a smelly bus or room? Smell these instead. Put ‘em by your pillow or on your hand where you rest your head. Helps in the archives, I’ll tell you. Some folks recommend Vicks Vaporub for the same reason.
Phone Card Check out the phone situation before you go and decide what works best for you. A lot of companies offer phone plans that you can use by dialing a local number on a pay phone – just make sure you have the local number available! If you think you’re using your cell phone, definitely do your research first, as a lot of phones aren’t internationally compatible (my parents, who travel a lot, have at least three different phones and plans, one each for Europe, North America, and Asia); even if they are compatible, you may be financially better off getting a pre-paid local cell phone.
Guidebook Not necessary, but quite helpful.
