Everyone (well, almost everyone) loves dessert. From tart and savoury to sweet and creamy, the best desserts come in all shapes and sizes. And while we might deny ourselves the pleasure of finishing off the meal with something special, when we travel the opportunity presents itself for some can’t-miss temptations. So splurge, enjoy yourself, and walk it off the next day with any of these ten of the world’s best desserts.

Mont Blanc at Angelina’s in Paris

The only thing better than relaxing on the River Seine at Sunset is savouring a cup of coffee or tea while enjoying a Mont Blanc at Angelina’s, the best bakery in Paris the world. It’s just a few minutes walk from the Louvre, and people usually come here for the renowned hot chocolate. (I don’t like it – but it’s a drinking chocolate. Not my thing.) But this concoction of think whipped cream and chestnut creme is simply the world’s best dessert. Without question. I could go to Paris just to have one of these. Stunning.

Quindim in Brazil

Quindim is another world-class best dessert, and appearances might be deceiving as sometimes its presented a bit like a Brazilian doughnut! Don’t be fooled, though; it’s of course much more than that. One of the many Portuguese-influenced treats in Brazil, it’s made with lots of eggs and sugar infused with coconut, which gives it this wonderful texture. The best ones are homemade if you can find them – some of the store ones aren’t nearly as fresh or as tasty.

Beingets from Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans

The beingets from Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans are almost as famous as Mardi Gras itself. I wonder how much powered sugar this place goes through in a year – it’s piled high to ensure your sugar rush is set for warp speed. I have it on good word these are good for a hangover too, a useful bit of knowledge in this part of town, though brace yourself for the long queues to get yours.

Gelato from Anywhere in Florence

It’s tough to choose which Italian dessert to feature as indeed many of the world’s best desserts come from Italy. But since I’m doing the choosing here, I’ll go with gelato – and Florence has some of the country’s best shops. Vivoli is probably the one the most famous, but I wouldn’t say it is the best. Others to try are Carabè, Badiani and Grom; just finding the places is difficult, but just get lost in the maze that is Florence and enjoy yourself.

Galub Jamun in India

Akil wrote about some of her favorite Indian desserts, and it is no surprise that Galub Jamun made the list. It is simply a fried dough in sugar, but I love the different flavours of syrup you can get: sometimes its a hint of cardamom, other times it’s a little ginger-y. An excuse to try them a few different times during your stay.

Maple Taffy in Canada

Canada has no shortage of world’s best desserts, but if you visit in spring then you simply must try a bit of maple taffy – just trying it is a bit of an experience! You see, it’s hot maple syrup poured into the snow and rolled around a stick. (Don’t worry, they use clean snow.) It tastes so pure and wholesome.

Hokey Pokey Ice Cream in New Zealand

I love ice cream, so it gets two turns to be on the world’s best desserts list. And what else but ice cream can be used as an excuse to visit New Zealand. Hokey pokey is vanilla ice cream with sponge toffee bits thrown in for good measure. You can find it at any place that services ice cream – in fact, if the parlours only have one flavour, it will be hokey pokey. But what else could satisfy your sweet tooth after a day of hikes and extreme adventure sports than some hokey pokey?

Churros from Anywhere

I love churros – and thankfully they are easy to find in many places. The world’s best churros are in Tijuana, in my opinion, but chocoholics will not want to miss churros y chocolat for breakfast in Madrid. Pretty much any Spanish speaking or influenced country will be serving up these tasty treats. Yum.

Nale?nik in Poland

Nale?nik is basically a Polish crepe or light pancake. It’s a difficult decision to make for me, because I do love pierogi filled with fruit as a dessert, but these tasty pancakes are easier to find. I think because the Polish ones come with lots of different fresh fruits, fresh cream, and a heavy dose of cinnamon, they win for me against their (delicious) French counterparts.

Umm Ali in Egypt

We close in the middle east, where desserts are often a touch less sweet than elsewhere – which I appreciate because although I love sweets, sometimes people go overboard. Umm Ali (translation: Ali’s Mother) is essentially what you would call bread pudding in the US or UK. But it’s far tastier. It’s a bit lighter and airy, and just heavenly. It’s worth going to Egypt just for this, really. Or find a local Egyptian restaurant where you are and ask for it. One of the world’s best dessert, indeed.

So you are planning a Walt Disney World trip this Summer? Well you do not want to go anywhere near Walt Disney World without these fun tips. Disney World is the funnest place on Earth for kids and adults alike. Thrills, adventures, and whole sum fun for the entire family.

Well first off, I am an 18 years veteran of the Disney World trips and family marches, yes I have survived at least 70 trips in all. For one I reside in Florida so it is not that big of a vaunt, truly. In all my trips the best tip that I can offer anyone is this, do the Magic Kingdom park counter-clockwise. Most people have a tendency to steer to the left and you most certainly want to go right, right into Tomorrow land.

At Tomorrow land you will experience the Monsters Inc. Laugh off, the Buzz lightyear toy ride, and of course the main reason anyone enters Tomorrow land, Space Mountain. The other Walt Disney World areas of Frontier land, Adventure land, Fantasy land, Main Street, and Liberty square and Toon Town. Another thought might be to quickly jump on the Main street train and get off in Toon Town. This is good if you are traveling with small children, and want to get some great pictures with the likes of Pooh, Tigger, and Cinderella and of course Mickey Mouse and Minnie. They all reside in the great merchandise tent, pictures for everyone equals smiles for everyone. Don’t miss the Goofy fun roller-coaster at Toon Town.

So you want to get a breakfast in with the Disney characters? Don’t make long waits at the Walt Disney World resort, the Contemporary. There is a little known secret inside the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin hotels. Character breakfast without the wait and those long incredible lines. You do not have to stay at any of these two hotels to make reservations to eat there, all you have to do is call ahead of time and make reservations, you can tell them that you want check out the hotel for a future reservation. Character at the Swan include Tigger, Pooh, Goofy, Chip and Dale and others.

The best part of staying at a Walt Disney World resort for me, is the fine bus service that is provided to you as a guest at the Disney World resorts. The buses run every 5 minutes during the day and night, and they run until the parks close, all of them. The relief is not only in the fuel department for your vehicle, but also the parking fee and the lines to catch the monorail or motor-coach. Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park now open

UNTIL now, Harry Potter fans could only imagine the sensation of quaffing a butterbeer, finding a magic wand at Ollivander’s or escaping the steam from a snarling dragon’s snout.

But finally, 13 years after the first of seven books began chronicling the boy wizard’s adventures, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park has opened its doors in Universal Orlando, Florida.

Past a stone archway and the steam-belching Hogwarts Express, the fictitious city of Hogsmeade unfolds amid snowcapped, dingy rooftops and storefronts packed like row houses with shops straight from the books and movies.

Zonko’s joke shop offers Sneakoscopes and extendable ears. The confectionary Honeydukes has chocolate frogs and Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans (literally ranging from pear to fish). At the Owl Post, guests can stamp mail with a genuine Hogsmeade postmark.

Towering over it all is Hogwarts, a perfect reproduction of the imposing, many-spired castle where Harry and his magician friends are students.

“Once we locked in and knew what we were doing, what we thought would be the most iconographic moments of the fiction to bring to life, it became a matter of executing at a level of authenticity and detail that was going to be unquestionable,” Mark Woodbury, head of Universal Creative, said.

Park construction was overseen by the production manager from the Potter movies, and as Warner Bros. filmed the series’ sixth movie – Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – scenes were shot for the park’s crown jewel, a ride called Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

The cutting-edge ride seamlessly combines the sensation of flight with tactile experiences like smoke and drops of water as it takes guests through a hodgepodge of encounters in Potter’s chaotic life, from the Quidditch field to the mouths of giant spiders and dragons. The ride queue stars lifelike projections of film characters like Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

“The special effects were just great! You really felt like you were riding along with Harry on his adventure,” visitor Karen Collins said.

Potter author J.K. Rowling is a stickler for details, and Universal worked hard to get her approval. So many recipes were offered to find the perfect look, texture and taste for the heretofore fictitious butterbeer that Woodbury lost count.

“We had to package up all the ingredients and rent a hotel kitchen in Scotland so that we could put it all together,” he said.

The result? A tasty, thickheaded (and non-alcoholic) brew reminiscent of cream soda, which has proven wildly popular with the fans who bought special tickets to preview the Potter park ahead of the public opening.

Like Wizarding World employees, some of these avid Potterphiles dressed in robes and wizard hats, at times giving the place the slightly geeky feel of a Star Wars’ convention.

Besides the Forbidden Journey, The Wizarding World has just two other rides: Flight of the Hippogriff and Dragon Challenge, both of which are older roller coasters repurposed with Potter themes.

There’s no additional admission for Wizarding World once you pay to enter Islands of Adventure. But guests who travel long distances to see it may be disappointed that there is not much to do beyond the three rides other than soaking up the scenery and going shopping – although long lines for the attractions could easily keep them in the minipark for hours.

The shopping opportunities are so extensive – from broomsticks ($288 to $346) to magic wands ($33) and Gryffindor scarves ($40) – that it feels at times like the whole park is for sale.

Twitter was filled this week with rave reviews of what was being referred to in tweets as “Wwohp.”

One fan who got access to the soft opening said it was the “best park experience” he had had in a long time; another said Forbidden Journey was so good she cried.

Free Things to Do With Kids in Any City

It’s so much fun having kids. It’s a great excuse to do the things you used to do as a kid all over again. But, as you know, it’s expensive enough taking care of their basic needs, and there isn’t always much money left over for entertainment. So, I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 free things to do with kids in any city:

Join a playgroup. Meetup.com, is one of many great sources you will find on the Internet to locate a free playgroup in your area. If there isn’t one listed near you, you can start one.

Watch airplanes take off. This isn’t very popular with babies, of course, but it’s great for your older kids. For a heart-pounding experience, see if you can find a place to lie down right under the path where the planes take off.

Volunteer at a nursing home. I made a bunch of chocolate chip cookies and took my kids to a local nursing home to hand them out. The elderly loved it and my kids learned a valuable lesson about giving and sharing. Note: Make sure that the home you take them to isn’t for patients with dementia. The occasional outbursts can frighten children.

Visit a local farmers’ market. Technically you can wander around and not spend money here, but you know you probably will. To make it a break-even “free” event, don’t purchase produce at your weekly trip to the super market and buy your produce at the farmers’ market instead. And there’s always some kid-friendly activities at your local farmers’ market, such as face painting, or the possibility of listening to local musicians.

Book a tour of a factory. Are there any large food or candy factories or newspaper printers near you? Most offer free tours, if you ask, and even give out free samples sometimes.

Camp out. Kids love camping out in the backyard. Set up a tent and sleeping bags and they’ll come up with their own fun.

Go for a hike. This activity is best with small babies or older kids. Preschool age kids may not be up for the challenge of hiking trails. But if your child is still a baby, purchase a baby backpack and you’re ready to go. Be sure to bring lots of water, sunscreen, and hats for you and baby.

Check out DVDs from the library. These are usually free but due back in a short amount of time or you get a hefty fine. There are selections for adults and kids as well as audio books for your long road trips.

Attend an outdoor concert. Check your local newspaper calendar of events each weekend to see who is playing and where. Sometimes you can spread out and set up a picnic on a blanket for your family.

Go for a ride. On a bus, ferry, trolley, or train young kids usually ride for free. It’s something different and fun for kids on the go.

Even what we consider mundane errands can be fun for little kids. They see the world in a fresh new way we have forgotten. Slow down a little, be ready to answer their myriad questions, and try to see things as they see them. It might just become a magical day for you, too.
