The first sight was dreamlike: a white body piercing the brilliant blue with the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Then I saw another, and an additional. A great number of pure white islands bobbed for the surface that, before I could reach for my digital camera, a pod of 25 beluga whales had circled our Zodiac. They dipped away and returned, a spray of breath signaling their arrival. I used to be near enough to see their faces-and I could swear they were smiling.

Of course, this run-in was no coincidence. My whale watch from the Canadian village of Tadoussac set out having a singular mission: to spot whales. And because whales populate North America’s shorelines, feeding, calving, and playing alongside the identical seashores we do, they are simple to discover, based on the time of calendar year.

Whale watching is an increasingly popular activity; it could also be intensely shifting. “I’ve observed grown guys burst into tears,” mentioned Philip Hoare in an job interview; he could be the prizewinning author of the Whale: In Research in the Giants with the Sea and also the Hunt for Moby Dick, a brand new BBC documentary. “It’s this kind of an psychological expertise.”

The affinity, and at times antipathy, among mankind and whales reaches throughout generations and continues to be well recorded in tales from Jonah and also the whale to Moby-Dick. Whilst sailors and whales were once sworn antagonists, the tide has turned in a single era. Commercial whaling peaked in 1965 and was outlawed in 1986, while recreational whale tourism is steadily on the rise, growing by 10 percent each and every year right into a $2.1 billion business last 12 months with some 13 million people heading to determine whales.

Fortunately, there are plenty of options. The denizens with the deep are a few of the biggest vacationers on the planet-just like us, several head south in winter. In Hawaiian waters, on-shore guests can watch newborn humpback calves understand to jump and play. In summer off Cape Cod, it appears you will find as several whales off the coast as you’ll find visitors on it.

Whales might be seen on every continent, but remain new and persuasive puzzles. We catch only a glimpse of again, a spout, a fluke, or if we’re fortunate, a breech-leaving our mind to assemble the whole. In reality, humankind saw pictures of the earth from room an whole generation just before we captured a complete underwater image of the whale. “They are utterly unfathomable,” says Hoare. Or, in the phrases of Herman Melville, “I know him not and never will.”

It’s kind of fun walking around the casinos and seeing well-dressed brides and grooms walking around with their wedding parties. Lots of people get married at the wedding chapels every day.

If you simply walk down the Strip during the day or night, you’ll likely encounter young Hispanic men handing out cards and brochures with pictures of naked women offering to come to your hotel room for “adult entertainment” purposes. If you don’t see the people handing them out, just look down – the sidewalk is usually littered with them. You’ll even see newspaper vending machines filled with ads for prostitutes. If the ads say “full service,” they’re advertising that they’ll have intercourse with you. Sometimes they’ll include codes like GFE (girlfriend experience) to indicate the types of service they provide.

Excess, decadence, gambling and glamour; few cities are as easily characterized as Las Vegas. From humble 18th-century beginnings in the arid Mojave Desert, at the southern tip of the state of Nevada, Las Vegas has become the world’s entertainment capital, where money talks and millions come to live life in the fast lane for a while at least.

Las Vegas, famous for its nightlife, is one of the most fascinating places to see after dark. The Strip comes to life once the sun goes down in a display of light and sound that can be seen from miles outside of the city limits. As there is so much to see and do, you need to be prepared if you want to see and do everything possible during your stay.

Every night in Las Vegas there are numerous choices for you to dance the night away. Whether you are looking to meet people, sit around a lounge and have a drink, or have a lot of drinks and dance until you drop, Las Vegas nightclubs offer all of those alternatives.

Las Vegas Nightlife is not about going to a club. Waiting line and get a drink anymore, Nightlife is one of the most wanted attractions by tourists as well as locals. Nightclubs became one of the top profitable products for the multi-billion dollar hotels such as Wynn, Encore, Cosmopolitan and others; of course the new clubs has to be so much better to compete with already existed mega clubs.

Las Vegas has always been considered as a very special city by the tourists. Travel to Las Vegas if you want to enjoy one of the most active night lives any city can have. Travel to Las Vegas if you plan to have lots of fun.

There is always a large, consistent demand for bookings and reservations from tourists all over the world wanting to be part of the LA experience, which is not surprising considering what a trip to LA can offer. And, with a seemingly endless number of Los Angeles flights available, this means there will be no shortage of visitors getting ready to flock to this popular destination.

Often the first place that comes to mind when people think about taking a west coast American vacation, Los Angeles is highly sophisticated and the second-largest city in the United States. As such the city features some simply stunning architecture and the usual array of other urban vacation enticements such as renowned museums and art galleries. But the city also offers additional, special inducements that are not really available elsewhere, including outstanding fusion cuisine, shopping on Rodeo Drive and the possibility of movie star sightings.

Not everything in Los Angeles relates to its urban sophistication: seemingly wedged between the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains, an arid desert and the sparkling Pacific Ocean, it’s hard to imagine a place that offers a broader range of outdoor activities. Swimming, surfing, boating and deep-sea fishing; yoga on the beach and rollerblading on the streets; hiking in the heights of the mountains and explorations amidst the desert’s solitude; and my oh my, the fabulous amusement parks. They’re all just a stone’s throw away.

Los Angeles has many nicknames, and they’re just as varied as its many vacation attractions. Most often it’s just called “L.A,.” a short and sweet abbreviation, but because the city is known for being a bit quirky, it’s sometimes called “La La Land.” The Hollywood district is often called “Tinseltown,” referring to its status as the glitzy, glamorous center of the world’s film and television industry. Tours that drive by the homes of renowned film and television stars are easy to find, but star-struck vacationers are sometimes treated to something even better: glimpses of Hollywood actors and actresses going about their business in the city’s restaurants, shops and theaters. And these same movie and television buffs almost always visit Hollywood’s spectacular Chinese Theatre and the inlaid stars along the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The famous Hollywood Sign, located on the side of the city’s tallest mountain, is only one of many iconic Los Angeles landmarks. The eclectic boardwalk scene at nearby Venice Beach is another and is rich with bikini-clad rollerbladers, together with artists, fortune tellers, belly dancers and other colorful street performers. Muscle Beach in Venice is appropriately named, with an outdoor weight room once used by Arnold Schwarzenegger, the actor who began as a world-class body builder but is now the Governor of California. And the classic ocean liner the Queen Mary, docked in nearby Long Beach harbor, serves as a beautiful reminder of the elegance of trans-Atlantic crossings in the not-so-distant past.

As for the arts, the Los Angeles County Museum Of Art houses a rich variety of paintings, sculptures, costumes, textiles and decorative arts from throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia. The Getty Center’s exhibits include pre-20th century European paintings, drawings and sculptures. But these two museums are far from the only art museums in the city. To the contrary, Los Angeles has enough outstanding museums and art galleries to satisfy almost any art buff.

Los Angeles is easy to get to, no matter where you’re coming from. Regularly scheduled flights from around the world arrive daily at Los Angeles International (LAX), the city’s largest airport, but five smaller airports also serve this fabulous vacation city.

Goldfield, Arizona

This gold rush town thrived in the 1890s, then died and was reborn a number of times. In the 1960s, it was reconstructed as a tourist stop with traps like reenacted gunfights in the streets. It was reconstructed as a tourist stop. Goldfield offers perhaps more kitschy fun than historical preservation: you can visit the Superstition Museum, ride a narrow gauge railroad, or see folks in period costumes stir up a reenacted gunfight in the street.

Closest Civilization: Apache Junction, AZ.

(James Van Housen)

Calico, California

When the price of silver dropped in the 1890s, it was the beginning of the end for this silver-mining town in Southern California. It was a ghost town by 1907. Today, Calico is a San Bernardino County Park, but you can still see one-third of Calico’s original buildings, as well as Knott’s kitschier additions such as the gold-panning attraction and a “mystery shack.” To get a glimpse of the old days you can tour one mine, or wander the old post office and schoolhouse.

Closest Civilization: Barstow, CA.

Santa Claus, Arizona

Launched in the 1930s to draw tourists and sell real estate, Santa Claus featured inns and restaurants with a Christmas theme, and tourists could meet the man in red pants year-round. The four-acre site has been for sale since 1983. But even if you’re not on the market for your own town, it makes a good detour on the way to Kingman or the Hoover Dam. You can see some vandalized buildings, an old wishing well, and the remnants of “Old 1225”—a derailed, pink children’s train.

Closest Civilization: Kingman, AZ.

(Allen Sandquist)

Thurmond, West Virginia

This coal town was booming in the late 1800s, but by the year 2000 was down to seven residents. Once a big stop on the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, its depot has been turned into a museum. Once a big stop on the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, its depot has been turned into a museum, and the town is now part of the New River Gorge National River. In 2005, 6 of its 7 residents reportedly ran for public office. You can check out the restored train depot and museum, but most folks come here for river rafting.

Bodie, California

This former gold rush town had nearly 10,000 residents in the late 1870s. Its slow decline lasted well into the 20th Century, with the post office finally closing in 1942. Bodie still has some stocked stores, and visitors remark on seeing products their parents or grandparents used to have. “People yearn for simpler times,” says Langner. “And sometimes they’re just blown away that they’re somewhere that doesn’t get cell service.”

Up and down Detroit’s streets, buildings stand abandoned and in ruin. French photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre set out to document the decline of an American city. Their book “The Ruins of Detroit“, a document of decaying buildings frozen in time, was published in December 2010.

Ruins are the visible symbols and landmarks of our societies and their changes, small pieces of history in suspension.

The state of ruin is essentially a temporary situation that happens at some point, the volatile result of change of era and the fall of empires. This fragility, the time elapsed but even so running fast, lead us to watch them one very last time : being dismayed, or admire, making us wondering about the permanence of things.

Photography appeared to us as a modest way to keep a little bit of this ephemeral state.

Due to the year round tropical climate in California, it has become the preferred destination by beach lovers from any side of the world. The shorelines that surround the area are truly to die for but despite the luxurious views, it can still offer an inexpensive beach vacation that one can dream of. The affordable beach paradise in California can be a hideaway for the entire family, couples on their honeymoon, or even college students who are making the most of their vacation. Whether visiting California to take a swim, to bathe under the heat of the sun, or take surfing lessons, the countless beaches can provide the best facilities and enjoyable activities they look forward to.

When visiting the San Diego County, a trip to the Oceanside City Beach would be a perfect destination for those searching for a tranquil beach scene. Taking a walk by the bay with the waves crashing at one’s feet may be a scene that people see on the movie but this beach can actually make this come true. Going around the town may also be an adventure that tourists can take by renting a bicycle to go around the area. There are also fishing areas and a marina where visitors can dine, drink, and enjoy.

The Santa Monica Beach may be one of the more family oriented beach areas in California. Other than the wide beach front, there is also an amusement park by the old pier that features fun Ferris wheel rides. Heading over the Venice Beach or Palisades Park by foot can also be done as these are located nearby. In the same way, the Newport Beach also becomes a fun vacation stop for families that enjoy hiking and water sports. Other attractions in Newport Beach also include the Fun Zone and the Balboa Pavilion that are a few steps from the resorts and hotels near the area.

Another family friendly beach area in California can be found in San Diego, the Coronado Beach. The hotels and resorts found in the vicinity of this beach can offer a fun filled vacation for all ages. The shallow waters would make a safe place even for very young children to play and swim in. There are also cruises, scuba diving, and boating activities that the entire family can enjoy together and rest by the beach front restaurants for a simple family dinner. The wide and winding beach area would make a great place for teens and children to play beach volleyball and frisbee while their parent lounge under the sun.

His photography is truly great and improving with every post. And no one seems to get into more unusual and entertaining, situations than him. Sally has a special place in my heart for two reasons: she is one of the few travel bloggers that is actually somehow less tech savvy than I am and, like me, her posts tend towards the long-winded. Normally a bad way to write for the short attention span of the internet, but I challenge you to go read a few of her posts and somehow not be enchanted enough to make it all the way through. Funny, snarky, thoughtful — she’s a great read and some smart book agent should snap her up now, because her form is perfect for that format.

So there you go. If you go and give these folks a chance, I bet you are going to agree with me that some of the finest travel writing out there today is not in magazines or books, but is right there for free on the internet. Pass the good word to your friends — the more people reading good writing, the better for good writing. Enjoy.
